Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) . Under the leadership of Music Director Juraj Valčuha, the Symphony offers a variety of classical, pops, family, and community-oriented programming with outstanding soloists and conductors. The Symphony, founded in 1913, performs in Jones Hall for the Performing Arts in downtown Houston, and serves over 400,000 people annually.

The Opportunity

Reporting to and partnering with the Executive Director/CEO, the CMO will lead the marketing, communications, and patron services efforts of the Houston Symphony to steward the institution’s brand and meet earned revenue goals. The CMO will work closely with an engaged Marketing Committee of the Board to develop successful strategies for reaching those goals. The CMO is responsible for a marketing/communications/patron services team supporting earned revenue of approximately $13 million.

Key Priorities :

Provide strategic leadership in the areas of marketing, patron services and communications.

Raise the profile of the Houston Symphony locally, nationally and internationally.

Create and execute marketing plans that drive growth for all Houston Symphony concerts and activities.

Develop a superior patron experience, from building out the capabilities of the website to providing exceptional in-hall experiences.

Lead the implementation of market research projects with outside partners as needed.

Think innovatively about sales strategies, audience development and communications.

Manage communications, public relations, and promote the Houston Symphony brand.

Direct organization-wide communications, including brand and messaging platforms, developing and implementing broad brand awareness and season messaging campaigns.

Oversee all social media efforts.

Leverage the artistic assets of the Houston Symphony including Music Director Juraj Valčuha, Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke and the musicians of the Orchestra.

Provide operational leadership and financial oversight.

Oversee the coordination of marketing and communications strategies and tactics to meet revenue goals.

Create and track the annual marketing and communications budget.

Direct the annual analysis and determination of single ticket and subscription pricing.

Direct the continued improvement of the organization’s website for increased ticket sales, in collaboration with outside digital and ticketing entities.

Work with outside marketing partners and vendors to negotiate and execute annual contracts related to printing, mailing, advertising and media buying.

Collaborate across the organization to ensure strategic alignment and cohesive efforts.

Prepare and give reports at board meetings and committees related to sales, audience trends, and budget.

Serve as liaison to the Board Marketing and Communications Committee and work closely with the committee’s chair.

Collaborate with the Chief Development Officer to create a holistic approach to patron/donor communications and to coordinate the patron journey from first-time buyer to subscriber to donor.

Work closely with Chief Operating Officer and Artistic Planning team on programming, marketing and sales activities.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of and passion for classical and other music genres is a must.

High level of integrity and dependability.

Demonstrated ability to drive sales and revenues. Facility with reporting and analysis of sales data.

Ability to be an effective and articulate spokesperson of the Houston Symphony in a wide variety of settings. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present at the board level.

Focused, strategic thinker with a high energy level and strong work ethic.

History of managing teams and maintaining a collaborative culture while achieving measurable goals.

Bachelor’s degree in marketing or related field.

5-7 years of experience in marketing or the non-profit field, including supervisory experience in leading multiple team members.
