Overview
The Homelessness Prevention Administration (HPA) works to keep New Yorkers in their homes. It collaborates with the NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS), NYCHA, and other City agencies to assist families and individuals in obtaining and maintaining stable, affordable housing. The
RENTAL ASSISTANT CONSULTANT
role is within HPA's Rental Assistance Unit and Legal Services and will support rental assistance and eviction-prevention efforts.
Responsibilities
Review requests for rent arrears and other housing-related emergencies, including exceptions to policy from FIA Benefits Access Centers (BAC).
Review and assess requests for exception to policy from BACs, Legal Aid, Legal Services, and Community Based Organizations (CBO).
Review the legal provider’s submissions and authorize payments for rent arrears and other emergency housing-related grants (e.g., Section 8, NYCHA, HPD, mortgage arrears, CityFHEPS).
Process requests for authorization of payment of rent arrears to prevent eviction; suggest alternatives to maintain housing for public and non-public assistance individuals and families.
Intervene in emergency cases to prevent eviction; maintain chronological logs of activities to document case disposition in the Rental Assistance Database (RAD).
Work on various schedules (9am–5pm, 10am–6pm).
Location: 109 East 16th Street, New York, NY.
Minimum Qualifications
A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, with three years of full-time satisfactory experience directly in social/human services or a related setting, including client services and employment planning/counseling.
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college, plus eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist, or eighteen months of related experience as described above. College credit from an accredited college may be substituted for this experience on the basis of 60 semester credits for 9 months of work. All candidates must have at least 18 months of full-time satisfactory experience as a Benefits Opportunity Specialist or in social/human services.
Preferred Skills
Working knowledge of Welfare Management System (WMS), Paperless Office System (POS), and good written communication skills.
