Position Summary

Project Kinship is seeking a detail-oriented and self-motivated Accounting Manager to oversee the finance department. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate and timely financial reporting, conducting in-depth financial analysis, and maintaining effective internal controls. Nonprofit accounting experience is a plus. The Accounting Manager ensures all transactions are recorded in compliance with state and federal guidelines, laws, and regulations. Excellent communication and a proactive approach to problem-solving and process improvement are highly desirable.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Financial Transactions - oversees and supports day-to-day accounting processes (AP, AR, account reconciliations, payroll and inventory recording, journal entry postings) and is in charge of month-end and year-end closing.
  • Asset Management – works with Operations team to ensure periodic verification of asset log; ensures proper treatment and recording of assets. Understands and records leases per GAAP.
  • Financial Reporting – reviews financial statements and prepares reports to management as needed. Assists with strategic planning and analysis.
  • Budgeting & Forecasting – collaborates with program managers for budget modification; assists in budgeting and forecasting for the entire organization.
  • Invoicing - prepares monthly expenditure reports per funders’ instructions and templates and invoices clients. Provides analysis and budget variance explanations as needed. Ensures all invoices are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Internal Controls – assists with updating policies & procedures. Ensures policies are followed by conducting periodic internal audits. Previews purchase requests to ensure costs are allowable, fiscally responsible, and aligned with the approved budget.
  • Audit – assists with fiscal and governmental audits by preparing schedules and providing supporting documents. Conducts periodic internal audit.
  • Communication – maintains open communication with leadership and provides support to program managers; reports any red flags timely so they can be addressed swiftly. Alerts program managers on over/underspending. Serves as a fiscal liaison between the funder, fiscal agent, and program leadership.
  • Team Leadership – supervises, trains, mentors and develops department staff; fosters a culture of collaboration, transparency, and accountability.
  • Proposition 47 – understands impact of proposition to prioritize providing mental health services, substance use disorder treatment and diversion programs for individuals in the criminal justice system. Project Kinship provides housing-related assistance, case management, peer support, recovery services, life skills, job skills training and civil legal services to those impacted by the justice system.
  • Participates in training and performs other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in financial review, reporting and analysis.
  • Proficient in QuickBooks and Excel. Experience building and maintaining databases of expenditure tracking, invoicing, and reporting data.
  • Experience working with non-accounting professionals to translate complex financial processes into simple terms.
  • Large-scale county grant management and audit experience is a plus.

  • Background Check Requirement: The successful candidate will be required to pass two background checks (Project Kinship policy and funder requirements). Failure to pass may result in withdrawal of the job offer or termination of employment.
  • Tuberculosis (TB) Clearance: The successful candidate will be required to provide documentation of a clear TB test or shot, in compliance with Project Kinship’s policy. Failure to provide proof may result in withdrawal of the job offer or termination of employment.

Pay: $98,000.00 - $108,000.00 per year
