Heating & Air Conditioning Maintainer (Provisional) at Metropolitan Transportation Authority

Responsibilities

Under supervision, Heating and Air Conditioning Maintainers maintain, install, inspect, test, alter, and repair heating and air conditioning systems and equipment of MTA New York City Transit structures such as shops, stations, and buildings. They work on air conditioners and components (compressors, condensers, evaporators, fans, motors, electrical and electronic controls and valves) and on boilers, furnaces and components (boiler sections, heaters, radiators, piping, pumps, motors, and electrical and electronic controls and valves). They solder and braze, keep records, write reports, and perform related work.

Some physical activities and environmental conditions include: loading and driving light utility trucks; lifting equipment up to 75 pounds; lifting equipment overhead; climbing and descending ladders; working at heights up to 50 feet; crouching to reach equipment; visual inspections of equipment; distinguishing colored wiring; reading blueprints and schematics.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Successful completion of a four-year, full-time apprenticeship in the construction, repair and maintenance of air conditioning and/or heating systems recognized by the New York State Department of Labor, the U.S. Department of Labor, or any apprenticeship council recognized by the U.S. Department of Labor; or
  • Three years of full-time satisfactory journey-level experience in installation, repair, and maintenance of industrial, commercial, or domestic air conditioning units, or commercial refrigeration equipment, or heating systems with electrical controls and wiring;
  • Two years of full-time satisfactory journey-level experience plus completion of one of the following before obtaining journey-level experience: two years as a mechanic’s helper/apprentice/trainee; or graduation from a recognized trade school or technical school with a major in electromechanical, electrical or electronic technology totaling 600 hours; or graduation from a vocational high school with a related major; or an associate degree or higher in a related field.

Note: If you have qualifying part-time experience, it will be credited on a prorated basis. The vocational/technical school and college/university must be appropriately accredited.

Requirements To Be Appointed

  • Driver License Requirement: A valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License with no disqualifying restrictions; license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
  • Drug Screening Requirement: Must pass a drug screening.
  • Residency: New York City residency is not required.
  • English Requirement: Ability to understand and be understood in English.
  • Proof of Identity: Must show identity and eligibility to work in the U.S. under the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

Additional Information

Training may be required during probation. Probationary period applies; failure to complete training or probation may lead to termination.
