Job Summary

The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will perform inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel trucks, trailers, and heavy-duty off-road equipment. Responsibilities include troubleshooting complex mechanical and electrical systems, conducting repairs with precision, documenting work performed, and ensuring all equipment is in safe, working condition.

This is a hands-on role that requires working both in the shop and outdoors in a yard environment, often under challenging weather conditions.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain diesel engines, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, electrical/electronic systems, and drivetrains.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including oil changes, filter replacements, and inspections of critical components.
  • Troubleshoot and repair air conditioning systems, suspensions, brakes, and steering systems.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, service bulletins, schematics, and diagnostic codes.
  • Conduct welding and fabrication tasks, including MIG welding, when needed.
  • Utilize diagnostic software, test equipment, and precision measuring tools to identify and resolve mechanical issues.
  • Complete all work orders, inspection reports, and documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Follow OSHA, DOT, and company safety standards, using proper PPE and safe shop practices.
  • Maintain accountability for company-issued tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Assist in mentoring and training junior mechanics or apprentices when applicable.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Hands-on experience with diesel engines, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and technical problems.
  • Competence in reading schematics, prints, and service manuals.
  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication practices.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, diagnostic scanners, and shop equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs overhead, work at heights up to 15 feet, and perform physical labor in various weather conditions.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving ability.
  • Valid driver\'s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Technical training or certification in Diesel/Heavy Equipment Service Technology.
  • Experience in fleet maintenance or dealership service environments.
  • Familiarity with inventory management and maintenance tracking systems.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting.
  • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions (heat, cold, rain, dust, and fumes).
  • Ability to climb in and out of heavy equipment for inspections and repairs.

Working Conditions

  • Combination of shop and outdoor yard environments.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions.
  • Use of PPE as required.
