The Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of Army tactical and combat vehicles, heavy equipment, and material handling equipment (MHE) at a contractor-managed equipment turn-in site. This role ensures that equipment being received or turned in is serviceable, safe, and compliant with U.S. Army technical manuals (TMs), regulations, and contract requirements. The mechanic supports the turn-in process by identifying deficiencies, performing corrective actions, and preparing equipment for storage, transfer, or disposal.

Responsibilities

  • Equipment Inspection & Maintenance: Perform technical inspections on heavy equipment, tactical vehicles, and MHE during the turn-in process.
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic system faults.
  • Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance in accordance with Army TMs, DA PAM 750-8, and AR 750-1.
  • Ensure compliance with Army safety standards and environmental regulations when servicing equipment.
  • Repair & Servicing: Perform repairs and adjustments on engines, transmissions, drivetrains, brakes, steering, suspension, and hydraulic systems.
  • Service and maintain MHE (e.g., forklifts, cranes, loaders, rough terrain equipment).
  • Conduct vehicle services (PMCS, lubrication, part replacement) to maintain serviceability.
  • Identify unserviceable or non-repairable equipment and prepare appropriate documentation for disposition.
  • Documentation & Systems: Record inspections, maintenance, and repairs using Army-approved forms and systems (DA Form 2404/5988-E, GCSS-Army).
  • Assist supply and property accountability staff in updating records for equipment condition codes.
  • Maintain work orders, parts requisitions, and job completion records in compliance with ISO 9001:2015 QMS.
  • Safety & Compliance: Follow all OSHA, Army, and company safety standards during maintenance operations. Use proper PPE, tools, and test equipment. Ensure compliance with HAZMAT handling, storage, and disposal requirements.
  • Support to Turn-In Operations: Coordinate with supply technicians and inspectors during mass turn-in events. Provide technical expertise on equipment serviceability and condition coding. Assist in preparing vehicles and heavy equipment for shipment, transfer, or long-term storage.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in heavy equipment or military maintenance preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience as a mechanic on military or heavy equipment.
  • Prior U.S. Army or contractor experience with tactical vehicles, combat systems, or MHE strongly preferred.
  • U.S. Army maintenance standards and technical manuals; PMCS; GCSS-Army.
  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret Army TMs, schematics, and technical drawings.
  • Strong problem-solving and attention-to-detail skills; effective communication and teamwork in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to operate MHE and obtain Army licensing (OF 346) as required.
