The Department of Systems and Information Engineering (SIE) invites applications for the department chair position. The department has a 50-year history of excellence in educating leaders in engineering and business and fostering innovative research and education. The chair will be a visionary leader and world-class scholar with a record suitable for a tenured appointment and will foster a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive environment. The Position
The chair will provide leadership for SIE, guiding strategic planning, faculty and staff development, alumni engagement, and recruitment of future faculty leaders. The chair will oversee the department budget and liaise with SEAS and University leadership to promote integrity, transparency, and collaboration. The role requires proven management, administrative acumen, outreach experience, and a strong research and teaching record. The chair should support faculty and staff to sustain growth and success. Responsibilities
Continue to build on the strategic vision and objectives of the SIE department Enhance the department's reputation within UVA and the broader systems engineering community Support and advocate for department programs and initiatives to SEAS and University leadership Maintain alumni engagement and involvement Assist in department assessments and accreditation processes Collaborate with department staff on budgetary and administrative needs for operational success Work with faculty and staff to improve undergraduate and graduate programs Mentor faculty, students, and staff to provide a positive and accountable experience Lead development and management of departmental resources Participate in assignment and evaluation of faculty and staff service Foster excellence in teaching, scholarship, and outreach Support scientific discovery through collaborations within the department and across the University Support, advocate for, and manage departmental staff Facilitate open communication and resolve conflicts with students, faculty, and staff Contribute to SEAS leadership and promote an inclusive department community Qualifications
Qualified candidates must hold a PhD in systems engineering, industrial engineering, or closely related field and have qualifications for appointment as a tenured professor per the School’s guidelines. Application Instructions
