Overview
The CNC Programmer Supervisor is responsible for writing and optimizing CNC programs, scheduling machining work, and overseeing the efficiency and throughput of CNC machines. This role provides leadership to CNC machinists in the Tool & Die department, ensuring safe operations, quality output, and continuous improvement of processes. The position also supports the Department Manager by offering technical expertise, resources, and guidance to balance customer, employee, and business goals.
Roles And Responsibilities
Develop, optimize, and maintain CNC programs using current standards, CAD/CAM software, and G-Code.
Supervise, schedule, and direct CNC machinists to meet production levels, quality standards, and efficiency goals.
Troubleshoot CNC horizontal and vertical mills, lathes, and other equipment; perform setups, tool changes, and offset adjustments.
Coordinate machining schedules across departments (Engineering, Maintenance, Die Shop) and ensure tooling readiness.
Train operators and team members on CNC programming, equipment use, and quality standards.
Monitor tool life, perform preventative maintenance, and maintain accurate documentation and reporting.
Support continuous improvement, lean manufacturing initiatives, and compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Education and Qualification
Education: High School Diploma or GED required; Associate’s degree in a technical field preferred. Certified Machinist and CNC Machinist certification required.
Technical Training: Industry-recognized qualification as a Machinist, CMM training, CNC standards knowledge, crane/forklift certification a plus.
Experience: Minimum 2 years in heavy manufacturing (preferably automotive), with 3+ years of CNC machining/programming and prior leadership/supervisory experience.
Technical Skills: Advanced knowledge of machining fundamentals (turning, milling), CNC programming, tooling, blueprint/CAD reading, troubleshooting, and automation basics.
