University of Virginia
Research Scientist, Department of Dermatology
University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, United States, 22904
Overview
The Department of Dermatology at the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Medicine invites applications for a federally-funded Research Scientist position. The role focuses on studying Epithelial Biology and Cancer Biology in the laboratory of Dr. Carolyn Lee, Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology. The lab investigates how genetic alterations and changes in cell signaling pathways contribute to skin disorders, including keratinocyte cancers and inflammatory diseases. Research combines genomic approaches with animal and human skin tissue models to study epithelial biology and tumorigenesis. Genome editing is performed using CRISPR/Cas9 and recombinogenic AAV vectors to introduce disease-associated mutations into endogenous alleles of human cells. The goal is to discover new therapeutic targets or vulnerabilities to improve treatment paradigms.
The Research Scientist will lead and collaborate on designing and executing experiments to enhance understanding of skin biology and develop new therapeutic concepts for disease prevention and treatment. Prior experience in molecular biology, oncology, and assay development is highly preferred. Expertise in bioinformatics (bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data and machine learning) and experience mentoring trainees are desirable.
Responsibilities
Lead and collaborate on the design and execution of experiments related to skin biology and therapeutic concepts.
Utilize molecular biology, oncology, and assay development skills to advance project goals.
Apply bioinformatics approaches to bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data; implement machine learning as appropriate.
Supervise and mentor trainees within the laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree or master’s degree with significant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Ph.D. or M.D. degree.
Experience in molecular biology, oncology, and assay development.
Experience in bioinformatics, including bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing data analysis and machine learning.
Experience working with trainees.
Physical Demands This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The role may require occasional travel to attend meetings and programs.
Salary and Status Anticipated salary is $68,000, commensurate with education and experience. This is an exempt-level, benefited position. The position is restricted and contingent upon funding availability and department needs. It is based in Charlottesville, VA and must be performed on-site.
