The department of Environmental Health and Safety is seeking a
Hazardous Waste Coordinator
to serve as the primary point of contact for generators of hazardous waste at UMKC. This position exists to ensure the safe and legal receipt, inventory, and management of hazardous waste. The position involves management of waste materials generated from a variety of sources including laboratories, shops, studios, and construction sites. The successful candidate will coordinate hazardous material and hazardous waste activities at two generator sites - one Large Quantity Generator (LQG) and one Small Quantity Generator (SGQ). Nature Of Work Manage the receipt, inventory, collection, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste from campus locations. Physically handle and manipulate containers of hazardous materials and hazardous waste. Respond to the release of hazardous chemicals. Perform chemical inventory audits. Train and educate employees and students on topics related to the proper management of hazardous waste. Develop related guidance documents. Inspect operations generating or having the potential to generate hazardous waste. Explain regulations that are sometimes complex or confusing. Effectively communicate University policies to faculty, staff, and students. Coordinate with other EHS team members to ensure a high level of customer service. Perform other duties as assigned. Key Responsibilities This position serves as the department’s subject matter expert (SME) for hazardous material and hazardous waste compliance and is responsible for identifying conditions and/or practices that fail to meet applicable regulations or policies. Schedule and execute laboratory chemical inventory audits Ensure laboratory chemical inventory accuracy Perform hazardous waste determinations. Develop and prepare waste profiles. Perform waste record certifications Analyze and maintain data related to waste usage Recognize hazardous conditions related to the storage, use, and disposal of chemicals. Assist with waste pick up requests from customers. Transport hazardous chemicals as permitted by law. Utilize and maintain the hazardous waste management database. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in a related/relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Environmental Science Ability to complete Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA) training within 90-days of hire is required. Current Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification and/or the ability to complete HAZWOPER training within 6-months of hire. Ability to complete International Air Transport Association (IATA) or Department of Transportation (DOT) training within 90-days of hire. Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM) credential preferred Anticipated Hiring Range: $70,000 to $76,000 per year commensurate with education, experience, and internal equity.
