Overview
General Adjuster (Commercial Property Claims) - Washington, DC. The General Adjuster determines and communicates the extent of loss or damage for complex and/or extensive commercial property claims across various business classes. The role may involve loss assessments in ranges that can exceed $500,000 depending on experience and complexity. Primary Job Responsibilities
Investigate insurance claims in varied settings (retail, office buildings, hospitality, corporate facilities, transportation, manufacturing, governmental facilities, schools, clinics, hospitals) and assess loss or damage from events such as severe weather, earthquakes, fire, vandalism, or accidents. Conduct property inspections, photograph claim sites as needed, and coordinate or lead a team of experts with in-depth knowledge of property and construction or relevant industry specifics. Research all aspects of claims with experts (architects, engineers, construction consultants, investigators, specialists, accountants) to determine cause of loss, extent, and subrogation potential. Collaborate with attorneys, public adjusters, and carrier examiners to conduct investigations and support evaluations. Communicate effectively with insureds, claimants, carriers, brokers, and managing agents; set expectations, timelines, and updates while demonstrating patience and guidance during large events or significant losses. Apply understanding of policies and coverage types to establish appropriate loss estimates based on available information and findings. Recommend reasonable payout amounts and ensure accuracy of information; guard against fraudulent claims. Prepare clear, thorough reports and letters for insurance carriers, including complex claims; follow policies and procedures, and submit reports timely. Utilize software such as Xactimate to produce accurate estimates; apply knowledge of loss types (time element, builders’ risk, stock losses) as needed. Maintain accurate field notes, time and expense records, and reimbursement reports in line with policies and industry standards. Required Education & Experience
Bachelor’s Degree preferred 6–10 years’ experience in commercial property loss adjusting; catastrophe claims experience; broad experience across manufacturing, retail, industrial, habitational, and hospitality Understanding of claims adjudication process with knowledge of commercial and residential construction and commercial coverages Knowledge of property claim law Active license, or ability to promptly obtain license in assigned state(s) Desired Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Designations such as CPCU, ARM, AIC, AINS preferred Exceptional written and verbal communication; strong multitasking and time management Customer service-oriented; strong analytical, research, and investigative skills Conflict resolution and negotiation abilities; highly organized and detail-oriented Ability to work independently and in a team; positive attitude and growth mindset Desire to impact outcomes in both small losses and large events Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, Xactimate, CoreLogic; openness to new technologies Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
Often required to work at property damage sites or disaster locations. May involve evening, overnight, and weekend travel; catastrophe responses may require extended travel (2 weeks or more). Exposures to outdoor weather, noise, chemicals, heights, and other environmental factors may occur. May require entering confined spaces, high areas, and physically demanding activities; occasional lifting up to 50 pounds. Requires close visual acuity to prepare reports and conduct inspections.
