Brown University Health SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Manager of Coding Policy and Education, research coding and documentation guidelines and create/update policies as needed. Develop Brown University Health training materials, work with Manager to publish materials online and update as needed. Perform audits on schedule or as assigned based on department policy, coding guidelines, payer rules, and/or system policies. Identify external resources, assist with external audits, record results and schedule related feedback sessions. Work with the manager to provide regularly scheduled education. RESPONSIBILITIES Consistently apply the corporate values of respect, honesty and fairness with the pursuit of excellence in improving the health status of the region through the provision of customer-friendly, geographically accessible and high-value services within a comprehensive integrated academic health system. Know and act in accordance with the Brown University Health Corporate Compliance Program and Code of Conduct. Research coding and documentation guidelines from reliable sources; collect and compile information into a user-friendly manual. Record training materials for coders and providers and publish recorded materials on the Brown University Health Intranet. Prepare for and conduct education sessions including specialty-specific coding and documentation guidelines, examples of relevant medical records, resource materials, etc. Review findings from external audits with the Manager and coordinate related feedback sessions with coders, validators and providers. Track internal and external audits and maintain a detailed log. Adhere to the audit schedule. Analyze reports on key coding/auditing metrics; identify trends and report them to the Manager. Assist with ROI analyses. Stay current with coding updates (ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and coding guideline changes) and notify the Manager of pertinent changes. Create components of a successful education process (lesson planning, audiovisual aids, Epic Tips sheets, knowledge retention exams, etc.). Educate validators/coders as requested and ensure adherence to the Standards of Ethical Coding (AHIMA, AAPC). Monitor validators for violations and report concerns to the PFS Manager or Director. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information at all times. Participate in committees, task forces, and quality improvement teams as needed. Perform other duties as necessary. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Associate degree or 3 years of experience in a medical coding/validating role. Certification required: CCS, CPC, RHIA or RHIT; specialty certification a plus or willingness to obtain. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams. EXPERIENCE:

Three to five years progressively responsible experience performing outpatient coding. Experience in a large multispecialty physician group and/or complex academic medical center preferred. Experience should demonstrate strong knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT-4 coding methodologies. Epic experience preferred. INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Works independently within department policies and procedures; refers complex problems to the Manager for clarification; able to work with minimal supervision. WORK ENVIRONMENT Remote work from home.
