Job Announcement: Substance Use Counselor (SUC) ICL is seeking a

full-time

Substance Use Counselor (SUC)

to join our team.

Veterans are preferred for specific VA Shelter locations.

Under the supervision of the Director of Social Services, the Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for providing direct assistance to residents with mental disabilities in understanding and managing substance abuse.

Minimum Role Requirements & Preferences:

Location:

Brooklyn, NY 11201. Available Monday to Friday. Shift hours TBD.

Education/Experience:

GED/HSE or higher, 3+ years in human services with substance abuse experience, preferably in a shelter setting.

Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor or In Training (CASAC or CASAC-T)

– mandatory.

Certifications:

Must obtain and maintain all certifications within 6 months of hire, including CPR & First Aid, NYS Opioid Overdose Prevention Program (NYSOOPP), and a valid state driver’s ID (NY, NJ, CT, or PA preferred).

Proper attire required—business casual or professional.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Ability to perform physical activities and manual labor as needed.

Proficiency in MS Word and Outlook.

Reliable attendance and punctuality.

Knowledge of mental illness and substance abuse disorders.

Ability to work independently and in a team.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills; bilingual skills are a plus.

Ability to facilitate meetings and organize tasks effectively.

Willingness to learn and comply with regulations and policies.

Active listening skills and cultural sensitivity.

Job Tasks:

Develop and evaluate case management plans.

Assist residents with transportation to appointments.

Implement evidence-based practices like Integrated Dual Disorder Treatment.

Maintain professional relationships and boundaries.

Participate in staff meetings and trainings.

Provide harm reduction counseling and relapse prevention.

Maintain accurate documentation and reports.

Assist in orientation of new staff and serve as a role model.

Ensure compliance with laws, regulations, and policies.

Collaborate with other programs and serve as a liaison as needed.

Perform additional tasks as assigned.
