Job Summary
Assists in managing single large projects or programs typically greater than $30 million, or projects that support an Engineering Procurement and Construction (EPC) contracting strategy. Manages development and delivery of a capital project or program to achieve cost and schedule objectives while maintaining safety and quality. Provides direct management and support to project team members throughout the project lifecycle. Coordinates with business unit contractor representatives to achieve Capital Project objectives. Accountable for execution of the Project Delivery Standard with a matrixed team of SMEs to ensure cost and schedule certainty. Reports and presents large capital project status to business unit and corporate executives.
Key Responsibilities
Promote safe behavior and adherence to safety rules; lead the project team to establish leading indicators and proactive safety requirements for contractors, project team members, and end users.
Define project organization structure and assign appropriately skilled individuals to the project team. Assist in contracts preparation, execution, requisitions, change orders, and invoicing. Fulfill the role of Contract Manager or Owner's representative as defined in contracts; issue formal correspondence to Contractors.
Lead the team to develop and execute the project per corporate standards, guidelines, policies, and processes. Navigate the Stage Gate Process (SGP) and coordinate deliverables (estimates, schedules, gates, etc.).
Direct the project team and contribute to deliverables (PEP, contracting strategy, cost estimates, schedules, risk register, reports); coordinate stakeholders and working groups.
Contract management for large EPC contracts and multiple subcontracts; monitor contractor performance on safety, scope, schedule, cost, quality, changes, and contractual compliance.
Develop and maintain the PEP; establish project documentation and coordinate efforts of all participants including consultants and contractors. Incorporate lessons learned into the PEP. Manage to budget and baseline schedule with effective project controls.
Provide clear, timely project status reports; prepare and issue status reports and presentations; identify and resolve issues; communicate with leadership as needed.
Coordinate with Finance, Legal, Operations, Supply Chain, and other departments to meet corporate standards and budget/timeline; turnover completed project equipment to Operations with documentation and training.
Serve as departmental SME and mentor other Project Managers and team members.
Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities) Minimum Basic Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field or equivalent work experience
Ten or more years’ experience in utility power generation
Strong safety record and commitment to a safe workplace
Experience with reviewing, executing, and managing large EPC contracts
Knowledge of capital projects processes and asset management KPIs
Strong contract negotiation, conflict resolution, problem solving, team building, and communication skills
Planning, organization, and time management skills; risk identification and mitigation
Ability to influence and motivate others; ability to make timely decisions
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and report writing/presentations
Willingness to work additional hours and travel as needed (including during storms, outages, or emergencies)
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in related field
Ten or more years of experience in large capital project management
Field experience in electric utility or related industry
PMP certification
Working Conditions
Office environment with potential travel to off-site locations (possible 25% - 50% travel)
Field duties in plant or field environments
Interaction with team members, supervisors, and client personnel
Exposure to plant environments with extreme noise levels; safety equipment may be required
Work at more than one job site in a day; may involve climate changes
Physical Requirements
Lift and carry up to 20 pounds
Ability to communicate effectively; normal hearing and vision
Ability to sit for prolonged periods; manual dexterity for routine office duties
Ability to travel to off-site locations as needed
