Transportation Engineer Trainee (Construction Engineering) – CTDOT, Office of Construction, Bureau of Engineering and Construction. Current students who will graduate with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Construction Management by May 2026 are strongly encouraged to apply. Positions available in New Haven, Newington, Norwich, Rocky Hill, and Thomaston. This is a full-time 40-hour-per-week role with a first shift schedule. Position Highlights Monday – Friday, full-time
Location: New Haven, Newington, Norwich, Rocky Hill, Thomaston
Telework eligible after successful completion of the working test period
Within the P-4 bargaining unit

A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required and must be maintained.
List driver’s license number, expiration date, issuing state, Engineer in Training license number (if applicable), and other relevant licenses/certifications in the Licenses and Professional Certifications section of your application.
The Role
Transportation Engineer Trainees work in various capacities agency-wide. Responsibilities include problem-solving, recommending and implementing effective solutions; contributing to safe and efficient transportation improvements; utilizing CAD software (MicroStation) and Microsoft Office; reading and preparing construction plans and estimates. Salary & Promotional Opportunities
Salary (Transportation Engineer Trainee): $72,629 annually After one year of training, promotion to Transportation Engineer 1 (Construction Engineering): $81,047 – $99,673 annually After two years as Transportation Engineer 1: promotion to Transportation Engineer 2 (Construction Engineering): $91,244 – $117,842 annually About Us

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications - General Experience:
Possession of a Bachelor's degree. Minimum Qualifications - Substitutions Allowed:
Possession of Professional Engineer (PE) licensure as recognized by the state boards.
20-302 may be substituted for the General Experience requirement.
Possession of Engineer-In-Training (EIT) licensure.
Additional substitutions (Target Class: Transportation Engineer 1):
Land Surveyor (LS) licensure; NICET Level III certifications; other equivalent credentials as listed.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in engineering or construction management
Experience with engineering software and construction management software
Team collaboration and communication skills
Experience interpreting construction plans and specifications
Ability to manage multiple activities with deadlines
FE or FS exam completion (preferred)
Special Requirements May be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
May be required to travel.
Working Conditions
May be exposed to highway, construction site, or on-site environments with a moderate degree of weather-related discomfort. Equality Statement
