Brown and Caldwell This Midwest Process/Mechanical Portfolio Discipline Leader (PDL) manages a team of process and mechanical engineers in delivering water, wastewater, and remediation designs to clients. The PDL is a strategic leader who uses strong group leadership, design management, and discipline engineering design for water and wastewater facilities. The PDL oversees the Process and Mechanical group workload, hiring, and project assignments, and provides mentorship and performance feedback for team members. This role has decision-making latitude to achieve defined goals and drives significant impact on the unit and organization.
Responsibilities
Supervise design discipline employees, evaluate annual performance, manage performance, and facilitate training.
Provide regular communication with the design discipline team to discuss workload for current and upcoming projects.
Represent the discipline to the Business Unit Client Sales Team with support for technical sales efforts and proposals.
Lead design discipline scope, schedule, and effort development in partnership with PMs and DMs.
Coordinate with PM/DM regarding staffing, schedule, or scope adjustments and escalate issues as required.
Develop relationships with fellow Portfolio Discipline Leaders (PDLs) and the National Practice Leader to collaborate on resources, workload, technical issues, design workflow, quality, and efficiency.
Participate in technical leadership meetings for the discipline and provide follow-up direction to the team.
Lead development of design discipline standards (e.g., specifications, standard details) and work with the National Practice Leader to coordinate resources for standards.
Maintain workload tracking for the discipline to understand team workload and identify gaps.
Build networks with subconsultants and on-call resources and coordinate their engagement on projects as needed.
Track and maintain professional engineer registration coverage for the discipline as required.
Perform QA/QC reviews for selected projects to ensure deliverables meet BC standards.
Lead, develop, and coach a high-performing team by setting expectations, providing feedback, and fostering engagement, growth, and accountability.
Oversee workload planning, performance management, and team operations to align resources with business objectives while ensuring compliance with policies and regulations.
Flexibility to adapt and perform additional assignments based on evolving needs.
Skills And Competencies
Demonstrated strong group management and design management skills.
Ability to balance multiple priorities including design discipline team management, design, bidding, and construction management services.
Experience with proposal technical approach development and design discipline effort budgeting.
Strong written and oral communication skills with ability to present and prepare technical reports.
Effective leadership and motivation to maintain high morale and quality work.
Self-motivated, able to work independently, and willing to learn.
Results-oriented and able to work under tight deadlines.
Experience
Typically requires a minimum of 15 years of relevant experience in the design discipline or related field.
Professional Engineer registration is required.
Education
Bachelor’s degree in civil, environmental, chemical, or mechanical engineering or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
Salary Range and Location The anticipated starting pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may vary by skills, experience, and education.
Location A: $106,000 - $145,000
Location B: $117,000 - $160,000
