CFD Research is seeking a
Principal Engineer
to lead, mentor, and grow a diverse team focused on supporting multiple projects aimed at developing innovative solutions to advance hypersonic-related technologies. The candidate will lead a team of engineers based out of Crane, IN and serve as a project lead and interface with external team members and customers. The projects the candidate will lead are heavily focused on assessing and improving hypersonic vehicle modeling and simulation capabilities as well as integration efforts with both ground test facilities and flight test applications to augment the development and fielding of hypersonic capabilities. The candidate will require experience with the multi-physics nature of hypersonic flight including technologies for characterizing: TPS aerothermal response, boundary layer turbulence, material decomposition and ablation, structural response, external flow modeling, flight trajectory modeling, propulsion systems (including rocket motors and air-breathing propulsion), plasma effects, and more. This role will support both technical contributions as well as leading, mentoring, and delegating tasking to other team members. Further, as a team and project lead, this candidate will be expected to serve as a primary interface for communicating project tasks, schedule, status, and results to both internal and external collaborators and customers. Basic Qualifications
US Citizen and meet eligibility to obtain (and maintain) a Secret Clearance MS Degree in Aerospace Engineering or Mechanical Engineering (or related STEM discipline) and at least 8 years of related experience Experience in developing and applying modeling and simulation tools for hypersonic aerothermal response modeling Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills Desired Qualifications
Prior experience serving as a team, project, or IPT lead Experience developing and applying modeling and simulation tools to additional hypersonic-related physical phenomena listed in job description (hypersonic boundary layer turbulence / transition, high temperature material thermo-structural response modeling, external CFD modeling, combustion modeling, etc.) Experience / familiarity with ground test facilities in support of hypersonic programs Experience / familiarity with hypersonic flight test programs (past and present) Active Secret level security clearance PhD in AE/ME (or related STEM field) Location: This role is based in the Crane, IN area and is 100% onsite.
