Overview
The Virtual Design & Data Solutions (VDDS) Senior Substation Designer functions in a senior lead engineering technician capacity. Under general direction, modify or create deliverables and perform assignments of a design nature by applying basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop complex design concepts. Provide technical guidance and may provide direction to other engineering professionals. The ideal candidate will have advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS) and advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS). Responsibilities
Engineering Standards: provide guidance and direction by utilizing knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and Black & Veatch policies and procedures; review project requirements and accurately determine the correct format and contents of the required deliverables. Quality / Continuous Improvement: promote quality within project/group/section; review design inputs to ensure consistency; assist to ensure deliverables are in compliance with the specific codes and standards suitable for the project; responsible for drawing control and historical records; demonstrate personal accuracy and drive continual improvement and change management efforts. Engineering Production: apply basic engineering principles and established design practices in developing moderately complex design concepts and deliverables; apply judgment and make decisions with respect to deliverables and input interpretation; provide technical guidance to other professionals; perform design calculations, detailed material quantities and estimates, and records; use advanced applications (modeling and design software) in performance of work; may review others’ deliverables; may define work assignments and maintain schedules; may program control systems or participate in plant start-up activities. Project Coordination: coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information; may support field activities; may communicate project design requirements, progress and schedules. Client Focus: assist with identification of key client interests and drivers; may communicate client interests to project team and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns. Knowledge Sharing, Innovation and Technology: assist in developing and communicating design standards and process improvements; identify training needs for personnel they supervise; may be recognized for expertise in one or more areas. People Management and Resource Management: assist with performance management, career planning and development; supervise engineering technicians with mentoring and feedback; monitor staffing levels and available skill sets; assist in identifying resource needs. Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: typically a minimum of 11 years related work experience. Education: Associate Degree in Drafting or Engineering Design Related Technology preferred; Bachelor Degree in Engineering Design Related Technology preferred. Technical Skills: advanced experience with AutoDesk Inventor (SDS); advanced experience with physical substation design (AIS and/or GIS); intermediate knowledge of schematics, wiring, and panel fronts; advanced knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, departmental guides and BV policies; knowledge of procurement & contract administration; ability to use CAD, information modeling, and document storage systems.
