Overview
Position: Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (Certified CTRS) Location: Boston, MA (Margaret Shea Adult Healthcare Program) Schedule: 40 hours per week The Margaret M. Shea RN Adult Day Health Program (formerly the Mattapan Adult Day Health Program) at Boston Medical Center provides structured day services in an ambulatory, home-like setting for adults who do not require 24-hour institutional care but may have physical, cognitive, and/or psychosocial impairments. The program serves adults 18 years and older who may not be completely independent and provides respite for primary caregivers. Responsibilities
Conduct therapeutic recreation evaluation procedures according to professional and departmental guidelines. Initiate new client assessments within two scheduled client days; complete evaluation and documentation within 2 weeks of admission per ADH regulations. Review patient records and gather necessary information; choose evaluation procedures reflecting the patient’s diagnoses, abilities, and limitations. Interpret evaluation results, develop an integrated diagnostic impression, and make recommendations. Perform re-evaluations per departmental policies; establish therapeutic goals with clients, care teams, and caregivers; educate on evaluation findings and management recommendations as needed. Incorporate findings and goals into the Interdisciplinary Care Plan; establish treatment goals and plans aligned with program, institutional, and regulatory requirements. Collaborate with clients, care teams, and caregivers to formulate measurable short- and long-term goals; modify goals as warranted by changes in status. Assess discharge needs when appropriate and coordinate discharge planning with ADH nursing staff and social worker. Implement comprehensive individual, small group, and large group programming; develop and implement treatment plans and activities to meet client objectives. Develop age-appropriate recreational activities and adapt equipment to support client goals; oversee monthly recreation activities calendar with PFAC feedback. Manage activity programs, community-based trips, and events in collaboration with team members; maintain therapeutic relationships with patients; engage clients and set appropriate boundaries. Ensure documentation is accurate, thorough, and timely; monitor supplies, equipment, and community resources; submit receipts as required; complete mandatory training and maintain CTRS certification requirements. Support student and volunteer training and oversight; participate in ongoing professional development and stay current with advances in therapeutic recreation. Serve as a clinical resource for ADH staff; train and supervise Therapeutic Activity Coordinators, Program Aides, volunteers, and students; participate in supervision and annual goal setting. Assist in recruitment and training of recreation volunteers; participate in mandatory meetings; provide in-service education and may present at conferences as appropriate. Ensure compliance with regulatory standards and contribute to program evaluation, quality assurance, and data collection as part of the ADH team. Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Therapeutic Recreation (or Recreation with emphasis on Therapeutic Recreation). Certification as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS). American Heart Association Basic Life Support (CPR) required. Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with older adults and/or individuals with cognitive or physical disabilities; experience supervising para-professionals or volunteers is a plus. Interpersonal skills to effectively interact with patients, families, and the health care team; analytical abilities to evaluate patient progress and develop treatment programs. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to interact with patients and families; assess and develop appropriate treatment programs; ability to obtain and interpret data to inform care. Familiarity with rehabilitation concepts, community re-entry, social skills, and recreational/leisure adaptation relevant to adult and geriatric populations. Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing therapeutic recreation practice. Education and Certifications
