About the Role We are seeking an editor with experience in metabolic disease research who has a critical eye, a deep understanding of their subject, and interests beyond their own area. Knowledge of liver disease (MAFLD/MASH), lipid biology or immunometabolism is desirable, though candidates from other disciplines covered by the journal are welcome.
This is a permanent position within the Nature Portfolio. The successful candidate will primarily support Nature Metabolism while collaborating with the translational and clinical research team and other teams at Nature Communications. Responsibilities and journal assignments may evolve over time in response to portfolio needs.
Nature Metabolism publishes high-quality papers in all areas of metabolic research and metabolic health, from fundamental cell biology to translational research, providing a visible forum for a broad readership.
Role Responsibilities
Handle original research papers and work with editor teams on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and overseeing peer review.
Make well-reasoned editorial decisions based on expert advice.
Contribute to content and strategy for Nature Metabolism and Nature Communications.
Commission and edit content such as Reviews, or write editorials.
Liaise with editors at other journals in the Nature Portfolio and with experts in the international scientific community.
Attend conferences and visit research institutions.
Experience, Skills & Qualifications
A PhD (or equivalent) in a relevant field covered by the journal.
Additional research experience is preferred but not required.
Understanding of recent trends and developments in the field is essential.
Passion for science and a broad interest in scientific research beyond one’s own specialization.
Ability to read and assess the novelty, context and implications of research across related disciplines.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including fluent English (written and spoken).
Willingness to travel and engage with scientists worldwide and help them understand what we seek in published papers.
Editorial experience is not required, but applicants with editorial experience may be considered for Senior Editor positions.
Reporting The successful candidates will report to the Chief Editor of Nature Metabolism.
Locations and Duration This role is based in one of the following offices: New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Shanghai or Beijing. The position is permanent and start date is as soon as possible.

Compensation and Benefits
US Annualized Base Salary Range: Associate Editor: $80,000; Senior Editor: $95,000. Salary may vary based on experience, education, skill level and equity. US salary ranges do not directly translate to other countries.
