Lead Designer, World
for our Online Multiplayer RPG at WB Games / Avalanche Avalanche is a Warner Bros. Games studio located in downtown Salt Lake City. We’re looking for a Lead Designer to spearhead the design and implementation of a cohesive vision for the game’s world and playable spaces. You will collaborate with the Game and Design Directors, as well as Narrative and Art Directors to oversee the strategic integration of activity models, gameplay types, environments, game systems, world navigation UX, and narrative design to create an engaging, cohesive, and immersive player experience. The Lead Designer, World will focus on the creation and implementation of the game’s environments and playable spaces. The ideal candidate will ensure the environment aligns with core gameplay, gameplay systems, and activity flow as well as the creative and narrative vision. This position blends creative, strategic, management, and technical responsibilities. Lead the development of playable spaces, levels, activities, and open world gameplay systems, such as traversal and world navigation. Define the overall player experience in relation to world interaction, immersion, and how the world connects with various activity models. Create, prototype, and iterate on innovative world features that harmonize across in-game systems. Collaboration and Coordination Collaborate with design, product, narrative, engineering, and art to ensure world gameplay complements other experiences. Work with product managers and analysts to align game systems with project goals and player insights. Partner with UX/UI designers to create intuitive interfaces that help players navigate the world immersively. Balance and Tuning Lead tuning and balancing processes, using player feedback and data to improve gameplay experiences. Vision and Documentation Define and document the vision for world gameplay, campaign, and activity flow, ensuring alignment with creative direction. Collaborate with story and narrative developers to create a coherent, immersive world that can evolve over time. Lead the creation of high-quality design documentation, including level designs, system designs, activity flowcharts, and user journeys. Mentorship and Team Leadership Mentor and manage designers across experience levels, fostering a collaborative and innovative design culture. Qualifications & Essentials 7+ years in game design, with 3-5+ years leading or owning major online multiplayer game spaces and systems. Deep understanding of level design mechanics, activity models and flows, social systems, and player UX. Understanding of how systems integrate with progression, rewards, and core minute-to-minute action and strategy. Proven experience designing and balancing levels and mission flow. Strong collaboration and communication across engineering, art, narrative, and production. Ability to conceptualize, prototype, and implement gameplay systems. Proficiency with game design software (e.g., Unreal Engine). Strong analytical skills to interpret player data and adjust designs accordingly. Experience managing AAA-quality design across cross-functional teams. Nice to Haves Experience with live-service games. Experience with data-informed game design and using metrics to enhance player experience. Experience with scripting languages or a technical background is a plus. Deep knowledge of industry trends and emerging technologies in game design. A passion for online multiplayer RPGs.
