Job Title: Scientist - Atmospheric Winds Location: MD US (Primary) Category: General Laborer, Scientist Job Type: Full-Time Education: Bachelor's Degree Security Clearance Required: None Job Description: STC is seeking highly motivated scientists across all levels to support scientific research, application development, and product support and validation for remote sensing of upper-level atmospheric winds from a constellation of NOAA and partner instruments, including future hyperspectral sounders (e.g., NOAA’s Geostationary Extended Orbits (GeoXO) sounder) and European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) IRS. This supports the ‘Winds Geophysical Product’ Category in the NESDIS Level 1 Requirements Document. The satellite wind products are crucial to the global observing system, significantly contributing to NWP forecast impact, and serving various users including: NCEP/EMC; NWS Forecast Offices (FOs); International NWP Centers; Tropical Prediction Center (TPC); National Hurricane Center (NHC); The Aviation Weather Center (AWC); Job Requirements: The ability to develop and maintain science applications in cloud-based operating environments is required in support of the NOAA-NESDIS 5-year plan to migrate to a cloud-based production and development environment. The selected candidate shall be proficient in programming in Python, C, Interactive Data Language (IDL), and Matlab languages, as well as with retrieval and validation methods of atmospheric winds derived from geostationary and/or polar satellite measurements. Education: Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Astronomy, Atmospheric Sciences, Chemistry, Climatology, Environmental, Geology, Materials Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, Physics, Space Applications, or related field.
