Job Summary and Purpose The Monitor is an entry-level position that works to provide security of the program premises, and safety for program clients, visitors and employees. Driving ability is preferred.

Responsibilities

Shelter Entrance Monitoring:

The front door to the shelter is the only permitted entrance and exit for participants, employees, partners, and vendors. Monitor and authorize entrance and departure of employees, participants, visitors, guests and other persons to guard against theft and maintain security of premises.

Bag & Person Screening:

Monitor and search all participants’ person and belongings brought into the shelter each time a participant enters. This is a critical step in ensuring the safety and security of everyone. Treat every participant with equal dignity and professionalism during screening.

Patrol Premises:

Patrol to prevent and detect signs of intrusion and ensure security of doors, windows, and gates; walk the facility and file reports as needed.

Shelter Safety:

Observe shelter operations during patrols; report and correct spills, unsafe conditions, or defective equipment.

Know the location of fire exits and be prepared to assist participants in emergencies.

Monitor clients and conduct room checks; maintain records of client compliance with program rules; report to clinical/case management staff and assist as required.

Call police or fire department in cases of emergency, such as fire or unauthorized persons.

Asset Protection:

As a non-profit agency, utilize limited resources effectively and protect the shelter’s assets from theft, loss or damage. Report all suspicious events to the direct supervisor.

Documentation:

Complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities (e.g., unusual occurrences, equipment or property damage, theft, unauthorized persons).

Role Modeling:

Act as a role model for participants at all times; learn, understand, and practice the professionalism expected; put clients’/participants’ needs first.

Client/Participant Support:

Answer telephones and take messages for clients and staff; monitor doors and greet visitors.

Maintain office housekeeping; verify all common areas, laundry areas and restrooms are clean and disinfected and fully operational.

As required by the Program, assist shelter staff during provision of services to clients/participants, including meal preparation/serving, monitoring and recording client self-administration of prescribed medication, setup for classes, meetings, recreation, and other program events.

Driving Tasks

(for licensed Monitors): Transports individual program participants to and from various locations. Assists passengers in securing wheelchairs, car seats and other mobility devices; ensures safety of passengers and operates vehicle safely; maintains trip records and mileage/gasoline usage; keeps program vehicle in good operating condition and clean; arranges routine maintenance and repairs.

Essential Duties

Shelter Security:

Monitor shelter entrance; screen bags and persons; patrol premises as scheduled.

Shelter Safety:

Monitor clients; conduct room checks; report violations of rules; observe for safe operations and conditions; report safety concerns.

Asset Protection:

Complete written reports and incident logs of daily activities and irregularities.

Client/Participant Support

Drive participants as directed (part of client support for monitors with licenses)

Other duties as required and may be subject to change

Act as a role model for participants at all times

Qualifications Requirements:

Must be able to pass a fingerprint clearance and background check, including criminal history, personal references, employment and education verifications.

Education:

Within 30 days of hire, must successfully complete VOALA safety training.

Preferred Qualifications:

High School Diploma or GED

Current California driver’s license and clean driving record; demonstrated knowledge of CA driving laws

Clean driving record to be insurable by VOALA insurance
