The Director of HIM is responsible for developing, administering, and managing systems related to health information management services and revenue cycle management functions at a facility/facilities level that support and comply with Corporate directives. This position serves as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) in health records maintenance, processing, electronic health record systems (EHR), clinical documentation guidelines, HIPAA Privacy and Security, Release of Information, chart completion/delinquency, transcription, coding and reimbursement, regulatory compliance, and revenue cycle management. The Director of HIM evaluates operations and technology continuously and recommends changes to improve processes, ensuring policies and procedures are consistently administered efficiently to manage health information and services. This role advocates for privacy and confidentiality of health information and ensures compliance with applicable state, federal, accrediting, and other regulatory agencies.

Responsibilities

Develops positive customer relationships by displaying professional and respectful behavior toward patients, physicians, team members, visitors, and family/significant others.

Communicates openly and honestly; follows through with assignments; supports teamwork at all levels of the organization.

Directs plans, develops, and implements systems for documentation, storage, and retrieval of health record information in accordance with accrediting/regulatory and company requirements.

Assists HIM OPS Market Director to develop, implement, and assess long-range and short-term goals; conducts studies and analyzes reports to inform staffing, organization, budget, and workflow decisions.

Monitors local/national trends and legislation in health information management and adjusts HIM processes accordingly.

Directs, plans, organizes, monitors, and evaluates the work of direct reports to ensure effective operations and compliance with standards, rules, and regulations.

Collects, analyzes, and submits data for required reporting in a timely manner.

Directs and evaluates compliance with privacy, information security, and confidentiality standards; ensures regulatory compliance.

Monitors completion of mandatory training related to privacy, information security, and compliance.

Directs development of systems for timely and accurate collection of clinical revenue integrity data and statistics; monitors performance via dashboards and benchmarking; supports KPI reporting and trend analysis.

Evaluates EMR and Legal Medical Record assessment mechanisms; determines EMR best practices; revises policies and procedures; improves workflows for high-quality outputs.

Oversees fiscal management including budget and staffing plans; manages operations to budget and resolves variances; develops capital budgets and plans for productivity improvements and cost savings.

Manages revenue and DNFB/DNFC processes; identifies and addresses factors impacting performance; supports resolution efforts.

Manages personnel: recruitment, development, retention, coaching, mentoring, performance appraisal, and disciplinary actions as needed.

Ensures compliance with Joint Commission, Medicare Conditions of Participation, and DNV requirements related to information management and medical record documentation.

Qualifications

Understanding of HIM processes in an electronic health record environment with ability to design and implement best practices.

Advanced knowledge of Joint Commission, Medicare Conditions of Participation, and DNV requirements as they relate to information management and medical record content.

Ability to interpret and apply organizational policies and systems; handle multiple complex assignments; strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Experience with multi-department and cross-functional project planning, project management, and change management.

Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; ability to build positive relationships with staff and leadership.

Proficiency in MS Office and data reporting; ability to develop and present data-driven insights.

Education / Experience

Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or closely related field; seven (7) years progressively responsible related experience, including at least three (3) years in supervisory capacity.

Previous successful Manager or Director level experience in hospital or academic hospital/health system environment; EMR experience strongly preferred.

Required Certifications/Licensure

RHIA or RHIT or active pursuit toward obtaining RHIA/RHIT is required.

Physical Demands

Standard office and hospital environment; ability to travel; duties may require lifting up to 25 lbs and walking across campus.

Work Environment

Office and hospital environments; ability to work independently in a virtual or on-site setting; travel as needed.

Travel

Up to 50% travel may be required.
