Breast Sonographer-Per Diem at Boston Medical Center (BMC). Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Ultrasound Manager and Lead Ultrasound Technologist, the Ultrasound Technologist provides skill and initiative to the department’s mission through interactions with staff, manager and others as necessary. The ultrasound technologist’s primary duties are to generate diagnostic sonographic images for the radiologists, while also implementing policy and procedures as determined necessary through the manager and lead technologist. Essential Responsibilities / Duties

Performs a wide variety of exams as required and necessary for proper departmental workflow. Assists physicians during sterile invasive procedures (e.g., biopsies, aspirations, thoracenteses, intraoperative procedures). Prepare exam room and ultrasound equipment to conduct sonography examinations in accordance with infection control, sterilization, and patient safety protocols, policies, and procedures. Completes exams in a timely fashion while providing quality scans for Radiology and outside departments. Prepares patient for exams, ensures patient comfort and modesty at all times. Assumes responsibility for patient safety during the sonographic exam. Follows all departmental policies and procedures. Sets up equipment and uses proper patient positioning and technique to ensure patient comfort and safety, and to prevent compromised data acquisition and musculoskeletal injury to the sonographer. Performs duties across all areas of the department, including multiple campuses, as required by the Manager or Lead technologist. Works schedules as required, including overtime as needed for department needs. Performs appropriate studies per policy and procedure; ensures exams match patient condition/history and seeks additional information as necessary. Identifies and documents any limitations to the sonographic exam. Works with radiologists to provide appropriate views and films and accepts additional views and variations as required. Provides service and care to patients of all ages. Maintains equipment through collaboration with management and service vendors to maximize uptime and minimize costs; keeps exam rooms clean and ready for use. Adheres to high-level disinfection policies and procedures. Delivers patient-centered customer service and ensures appropriate standards are met. Communicates with patients in an understandable manner; handles telephone requests professionally; treats patients and staff with dignity and respect. Accommodates patient and staffing needs through flexible scheduling and timely studies. Provides information on reports as appropriate and avoids unnecessary discussions around patients; monitors patient conditions and escalates as needed to ensure the best course of action. Operates electronic systems (PACS, RIS, Epic) and other required systems efficiently. Completes all required documentation, including requisitions, procedures, and billing-related records per hospital and department requirements. Applies the hospital’s Values to decision-making and supports the division’s mission. Follows infection control and safety procedures; performs other duties as assigned. Associate’s degree (or equivalent) or certificate program in diagnostic medical sonography prior to hire. American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification (OB or AB or RVT) required; accreditation must be attained prior to hire except for OB/GYN (one year to obtain accreditation). Experience in related clinical area is preferred. Knowledge of Ultrasound principles and procedures; operation and maintenance of ultrasound equipment; excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Special Working Conditions

The ultrasound department requires 24/7 coverage; occasionally staff may be mandated to work overtime or other shifts as needed to support department needs. Equal Opportunity
