Job Purpose

The Senior Data Analyst supports the College’s data stewards by ensuring accurate documentation, quality, and accessibility of institutional data. This role leverages data governance tools to facilitate data discovery, promote consistent definitions, and enable trusted use of data across departments. The Senior Data Analyst provides expert analysis, partners with stakeholders to identify data-driven opportunities, and helps advance a culture of data-informed decision-making at the College.

Minimum Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Statistics, Math, or a related field and five years of applicable experience in data analysis and warehousing is required. Relevant experience may be substituted for the Bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. A Master’s degree is preferred. Candidates with an equivalent combination of experience and/or education are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Required Skills:

  • General
    • Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Prioritize, plan, and accomplish duties in a timely manner.
    • Proven research, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
    • Talent for identifying and executing enhancements to improve the efficiency of data and business processes.
    • Proficiency with MS Office.
  • Technical
    • Proven ability to integrate and configure AI tools (e.g., OpenAI, Gemini) to enhance productivity, with sound judgment in evaluating security, cost, and operational implications.
    • Experience with Data mining, including techniques of data extraction, documentation, analysis, and reporting.
    • Reporting tools such as Cognos/Insights/Argos.
    • Dashboarding or visual analytics such as Tableau and Power BI.
    • Programming and statistical languages such as SQL, Python, R, SAS, and SPSS.
  • Understanding of:
    • Data modeling, ETL processes, and/or data integration techniques.
    • Data Lake Management.
  • Familiarity with data governance, security, and privacy best practices.

Communications

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders.
  • Ability to form successful working relationships with senior leadership, faculty, staff, students, and external authorities as appropriate.
  • Ability to provide status reports and other technical reports clearly and concisely.

Preferred Skills

  • Proficiency in data modeling, ETL processes, and/or data integration techniques.
  • Working knowledge of data extraction, documentation, analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience with cloud-based data warehousing and data lake solutions (AWS Redshift, Google BigQuery, Azure Data Lake).
  • Tools applicable to current systems (Cognos/Insights/Argos/Tableau/Power BI/SQL/Python/R SAS/SPSS).
  • Knowledge of FERPA regulations and other data security and privacy laws.
  • Data analysis techniques like machine learning, predictive modeling, and statistical analysis.
  • Big data technologies (Hadoop, Spark, or similar).
  • Understanding of higher education data needs and systems (e.g., Ellucian’s Banner ERP and ODS, Oracle databases).
  • Repositories such as Salesforce, IPEDS, US News, and NSC.

Job Duties

Data Management

  • Collaborates with IT team members, institutional colleagues, and external partners to build automated data pipelines for exchanging data and information. Contributes to pipeline development using business intelligence tools (Cognos, Argos) and ETL tools (Informatica, Tableau Prep Builder).
  • Implement and maintain data warehouse solutions and optimize performance.
  • Manage the data lifecycle, ensuring data integrity, accuracy, and consistency within the data warehouse. Support the Ellucian Banner ODS lifecycle and patching.
  • Manage data lakes to store and process large volumes of data and implement data governance and security measures.
  • Leverage data governance tools to document metadata, ensure data quality, support data discovery, and promote trusted use of data.
  • Integrate with machine learning tools (e.g., OpenAI, Gemini) with proper security and cost assessments.
  • Establish data tracking and collection methods to ensure accuracy in analyses.

Data Integration and ETL

  • Collaborate with EAM, Institutional Research, and other stakeholders to ensure seamless data integration into the data lake for analysis and reporting.
  • Develop and manage third-party ETL processes to support reports and dashboards; assess AI implications.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot ETL processes for data quality and reliability.

Data Analysis & Reporting

  • Perform data analysis to identify trends and provide actionable insights for planning and efficiency.
  • Develop and maintain dashboards and reports; communicate findings to stakeholders.
  • Provide recommendations to drive business improvements and harmonize data across systems.

Support and Training

  • Provide end-user training on BI reports and interpretation of insights.
  • Maintain data and process documentation for continuity and accessibility.
  • Triage data problems and collaborate to resolve issues within deadlines.
  • Test and validate reports; update as business needs change.

BI Strategy and Project Management

  • Contribute to data literacy goals and a BI strategic roadmap.
  • Research BI technologies and industry trends to enhance data insights.
  • Evaluate and optimize BI tools to support institutional priorities.
  • Manage BI projects and participate in project teams.

Collaboration and Communication

  • Participate in data-related committees; work with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and support technical needs.
  • Communicate complex data concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.

Continuous Improvement

  • Stay current with industry trends in data analytics and warehousing.
  • Identify and implement process improvements; pursue training and certifications; mentor junior staff.
