Job Overview
The Accounting Manager is an EXEMPT position responsible for overseeing daily accounting operations, supporting financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. This role leads the accounting team in delivering accurate and timely financial statements, managing construction project billing, and supporting leadership in achieving the company’s financial goals. The ideal candidate has a strong background in construction accounting and excels at building and managing high-performing teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Essential duties and responsibilities
- Lead and manage daily accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll coordination, and banking.
- Supervise and develop accounting staff through training, coaching, and performance evaluations to ensure a high-performance, accountable team.
- Oversee all aspects of project accounting, including: Initial project setup in accounting software with cost codes, budgets, and contract values; Coordination with project managers to track budgets, cost-to-complete, and job profitability; Preparation and review of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and job cost reports; Management of billing, change orders, retainage tracking, and subcontractor requisitions; Reconciliation of project costs and validation of revenue recognition in alignment with project milestones.
- Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting, including monthly closings, quarterly reviews, and year-end statements.
- Support financial audits, tax filings, and external reporting requirements.
- Collaborate on the preparation and monitoring of company and project-level budgets and forecasts; provide variance analysis and financial insights.
- Manage subcontractor and vendor payment processes, ensuring proper lien releases, compliance documentation, and adherence to contract terms.
- Maintain internal controls and ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and applicable laws and regulations.
- Monitor and improve accounting systems and workflows to increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Collaborate with project teams, executives, and other departments to ensure financial alignment and promote informed decision-making.
- Ensure compliance with union requirements, certified payroll reporting, prevailing wage obligations, and other construction-related regulations.
- Assist with or lead implementation of accounting and project management software improvements and integrations.

Education and experience
REQUIRED
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting
- 3-5 years of Financial Management experience
- 3-5 years of Supervisory or Leadership experience
- 1-3 years of vertical commercial construction accounting experience
- Highly proficient in MS Office Suite and financial management and accounting software (Sage, Oracle, Zoho, Quicken, etc.)
Preferred
- Master’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting
- 5+ years of Financial Management experience
- 3+ years of experience in construction industry
- 5+ years of Supervisory or Leadership experience
- 5+ years of vertical commercial construction accounting experience
Physical Demands
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times
- Must be able to drive and pick up supplies and other items as needed
