The Medical Technologist I performs a variety of tests of moderately and highly complex nature on a variety of patient samples. It performs qualitative and quantitative tests and examinations using various analyzers and/or manual methods on specimen sources such as blood, bone marrow, tissues, and other body fluids using established procedures. It maintains quality assurance procedures (quality control testing, instrument function checks and calibrations), maintains documentation, and reports irregularities. It assists in training laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents, and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology. Duties & Responsibilities

Performs moderately and highly complex tests by various manual and instrumental methods on peripheral blood, bone marrow, body fluids, and tissue specimens with minimal supervision while adhering to policies and procedures for accuracy and precision. Operates, troubleshoots, and resolves flow cytometer technical problems and documents corrective actions per laboratory procedures. Performs instrument maintenance, QC, start-up, shut-down, and minor troubleshooting. Performs quantitative and qualitative flow cytometry studies including staining for Immunophenotyping panels and cell subset analysis. Assesses specimen adequacy and prepares samples using manual and automated methods. Prepares flow cytometry instrument data for review of instrument performance and test result validity. Utilizes flow cytometer computer system to calibrate, perform quality control, acquire data, and review patient histograms base information. Assesses accuracy and validity of test results by applying scientific principles; recognizes changes critical to patient care; consults with Supervisor prior to releasing unusual results; notifies providers of technical problems following Compliance and HIPAA. Performs bone marrow collection assistance, maintains bone marrow cart readiness, supplies as requested by the physician, and prepares slides and specimens for analysis. Prepares bone marrow smears, processing, staining, and filing. Performs cases accessioning for Bone Marrows and Immunophenotyping. Receives diverse patient specimens and prepares them for testing or referral to other laboratories. Participates in data collection and monitoring of quality assurance; maintains records accordingly. Completes Quality Assurance Investigation Logs to document follow-up or corrective action. Maintains a neat, orderly and safe laboratory environment in compliance with guidelines including OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens. Adheres to customer service guidance; interact professionally with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and customers. Participates in CAP proficiency testing and completes related reports; engages in the laboratory CE program annually. Interacts with physicians, patients, staff, visitors and customers in a courteous manner. Performs LIS-related functions including accessioning, result entry, verification, look-ups, and other LIS tasks through the UI Hospital LIS. Assists in training of laboratory personnel, new employees, medical residents and students in the principles and techniques of medical technology. Performs other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent. Meets basic standards and qualifications for laboratory testing personnel under CLIA, Subpart M, Section 493.1489. Preferred Qualifications

Must meet educational requirements set forth by CLIA88, Subpart M. 493.1483. Familiar with CAP accreditation and CLIA 88 requirements in the general laboratory. Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Sciences or related fields is strongly recommended. Training on daily bench assignments with staff technologists or supervisors prior to duties described above. Knowledge of handling potentially infectious specimens and waste disposal; understanding QA programs; ability to identify and communicate technical/clinical problems to supervisory staff; ability to maintain professional communication.
