Role Description We are seeking a highly motivated and agile Senior Director with extensive experience in skeletal biology and disease to join the Musculoskeletal Therapeutic (MSK) Area in BioMarin Research. The Senior Director will use their skeletal biology and disease background to influence and guide the development of ongoing and new therapeutic programs in the skeletal disease space. The role reports into the Head of the Musculoskeletal Therapeutic Area as a member of the Therapeutic Area Leadership Team. The role will have extensive interactions and partnership within Research and across the company.

The successful candidate will have deep experience and professional connections in the skeletal biology and disease community to facilitate and guide BioMarin’s future developments in this space. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of collaboration and partnership on complex scientific research efforts in skeletal disease. The role will have two key areas of focus: 1) influencing the internal preclinical skeletal disease therapeutic pipeline and 2) initiating, guiding or leading external partnerships with leading experts to evaluate novel therapeutic approaches. The ideal candidate will have >15+ years of skeletal disease and biology research experience, Biotech/Pharma industry and therapeutic development experience is desirable. While management experience is desirable, the ability to work collaboratively with a wide array of partners is critical.

Identification, initiation, and monitoring external partnerships

Demonstrate ability to engage with industry and academic external scientific community to build a network of relationships that catalyze progress in identifying therapeutic strategies to skeletal diseases.

Influence and execute on external partnerships aimed at addressing key technical limitations for therapy development for skeletal diseases with high unmet needs.

Identify and launch key external collaborations to explore novel skeletal disease therapeutics.

Navigate internal governance on new project initiation and resourcing.

Bringing skeletal biology expertise to guide and influence novel therapeutic programs

Effectively collaborate with both internal and external scientists on novel therapeutic programs for skeletal diseases.

Lead with vision and purpose to influence the content and strategy of the internal skeletal disease pipeline in alignment with corporate objectives.

Demonstrate organizational savvy and ability to mitigate risks across a portfolio of programs.

Persuasively present complex information to various audiences and constructively negotiate desired outcomes with key stakeholders.

Produce and advise on the design of program strategies to efficiently develop novel treatments.

Actively seek knowledge of therapeutic innovations to keep BioMarin on the cutting edge of skeletal condition therapeutic development.

Serve as a key expert to guide evaluation and diligence on business development opportunities.

Passion for contributing your scientific skills to develop therapies for patients in need.

Able to take setbacks in stride and champion change with shifting timelines and priorities.

Requires minimal direction of day‑to‑day responsibilities, including collaboratively working with multidisciplinary teams.

Some “off‑core business hours” work required.

Some travel for scientific conferences and managing external collaborators

Complete all company training requirements.

Education and Experience Requirements

PhD and/or MD in a related subject area with demonstrated research experience in skeletal biology.

Extensive academic and/or industrial experience in skeletal biology.

Demonstrated experience in skeletal biology/disease research in academia or industry with an extensive publication record.

This position is full‑time on‑site or hybrid and based in San Rafael, CA
