Job Summary
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) is a world leader in proven, reliable remotely piloted aircraft and tactical reconnaissance radars, as well as advanced high‑resolution surveillance systems. We have an exciting opportunity for a Flight Controls Engineering Supervisor in Poway, CA. You will play a pivotal role in supervising the development of flight control and autopilot systems for our world‑class production Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) programs. The role reports to a GNC Engineering Senior Manager and is responsible for leading and managing a team of flight controls engineers to design, develop, integrate, and test flight control systems, ensuring safety, performance, and compliance with customer requirements and industry standards.
Duties and Responsibilities
Supervise and mentor a team of flight controls engineers, providing guidance, support, and technical expertise for all GA‑ASI production aircraft systems. Manage flight control system development projects from concept to implementation, ensuring technical requirements are met while adhering to project budgets and timelines. Troubleshoot navigation and flight control anomalies via flight data analysis, correlating with flight software operation and generating corrective actions. Assign tasks, set goals, and track progress to meet project deadlines. Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and safety requirements for flight control systems. Participate in certification processes and secure approval of flight control systems by relevant aviation authorities. Serve as the primary interface between the Flight Technologies GNC group and product line program offices. Collaborate closely with cross‑functional teams, including project engineering, systems engineering, aerodynamics, avionics, flight sensors, and software engineering. Maintain a deep understanding of flight control system design, principles, and emerging technologies. Investigate and resolve technical issues experienced in fielded systems. Recruit, hire, retain, and develop engineers with the necessary skill sets to support projects in GNC and related areas. Participate in bid and proposal activities. Maintain comprehensive documentation of engineering designs, specifications, and test plans. Ensure compliance with company and customer documentation standards and practices.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s, master’s, or Ph.D. in engineering or a related technical discipline plus progressive engineering experience: nine or more years with a bachelor's, seven or more years with a master’s, or four or more years with a Ph.D. (equivalent experience may substitute education). Proven experience in a leadership or management role. Heavy experience in control systems design and analysis, navigation systems, aircraft flight dynamics, and aircraft flight controls. In‑depth knowledge of aviation regulations and standards. Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Project and task management experience. Proficiency with simulation and modeling software used in flight control system development (Matlab, Simulink, and custom scripts). Occasional travel to the company flight test facilities is required. Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance is required.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with GA‑ASI aircraft, specifically Gray Eagle and Predator variants. Experience with GA‑ASI GNC analysis tools, procedures, simulation environments, and test methodologies. Experience with various aircraft types, including both unmanned and manned fixed‑wing and rotary‑wing aircraft. Familiarity with advanced control design concepts. Proficiency in C, Linux OS, Python, MATLAB auto‑coding, and MS Project.
Salary Range
$105,890 - $189,545 (Full‑time)
