Principal Engineer, Transmission System Planning (Hybrid)

Westwood, MA | Full-time | $146,500-$162,780 | Hybrid – first 3 months onsite About This Role

The Principal Engineer leads advanced transmission planning, developing long‑range studies that forecast load, generation, renewables, and market conditions. The role interfaces with regional and national utilities, informs regulatory filings, and represents Eversource on the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), ISO‑NE, NERC, and NPCC. Essential Functions

Serve as a technical specialist in transmission planning, applying advanced theories to develop integrated power system designs. Lead, perform reliability and strategic scenario‑based planning studies covering voltage, thermal, PV, transfer limits, short‑circuit, electromagnetic transient, and stability assessments. Use technical expertise to develop robust, reliable, and low‑cost solutions, providing sound engineering input. Exchange results and conduct critical review of data and assumptions from regional and industry stakeholders. Interface with ISO‑NE, area transmission owners, and Eversource departments to mitigate electric system needs and enable reliable future growth. Document and communicate results and recommendations, including data manipulation, report writing, and summary presentations. Collaborate with cross‑functional groups to develop long‑range planning criteria for integrating new technologies such as PV, EV, and battery storage. Direct complex engineering projects, leading multi‑disciplinary teams that utilize state‑of‑the‑art technology. Prepare documentation and testimony in support of regulatory filings. Present recommendations and/or results to all levels of management as appropriate. Other Supporting Tasks

Represent Eversource on regional, national, and international committees such as NATF, IEEE, and state public utility commissions. Demonstrate self‑sufficiency, accountability, consistency, and cooperation with all departments. Mentor and provide technical training to other engineers. Perform emergent storm assignments as needed during inclement weather or adverse system conditions. Technical Knowledge and Skills

Advanced electrical theory applied to power system planning. Experience producing results and conclusions using power system modeling and simulation software for steady state power flow, voltage, short circuit, stability, and electromagnetic transients. Advanced understanding of HVDC and inverter‑based resource parameters and modeling, including simulation experience in weak grid systems. Strong communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills. Proficiency in PSSE, PSCAD, Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, Visio, SharePoint, OneDrive); programming experience highly desirable: Python, VBA. Experience applying NERC TPL, NPCC, and ISO‑NE planning procedures. Education

Master’s degree in engineering or science field required. Ph.D. in engineering preferred. Experience

Minimum of ten years specialized experience in transmission planning, software simulations, and IBR modeling. PE license preferred. Competencies
