Director of Animal Health
Zoo New England seeks a Director of Animal Health to oversee clinical practice, commissary, and lead hospital staff. The role supports ~1,800 animals across 270 species, One Health, conservation medicine, and research initiatives. The director collaborates with two associate veterinarians, a commissary supervisor, and the integrated pest management specialist at Franklin Park Zoo, the main operations base.
The position requires strong communication, leadership, and high energy. The director works for both Franklin Park Zoo and Stone Zoo, provides care for local wildlife at a museum, and leads conservation and scientific research plans.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Oversee medical and surgical care of all animals at ZNE and Mass Audubon’s Blue Hills Trailside Museum
Lead the clinical team and manage the case load and preventative health program up to AZA and AAZV standards
Coordinate with zoo staff for animal health maintenance and commissary/nutrition operations
Conceive, plan, and execute conservation medicine and scientific research projects related to zoo and wildlife species
Preferred Qualifications
Board certification with the American College of Zoological Medicine strongly preferred
5+ years full‑time clinical zoo practice with excellent clinical skills
Experience and interest in conservation medicine
Knowledge of animal nutrition, diet formulation, and commissary operations
Research design and implementation using scientific method
Willingness to publish in scholarly journals and engage in the professional zoo medicine community
Management experience and desire to lead a team
Working knowledge of exotic and zoo animal health care, wildlife regulations, and AZA/USDA guidelines
DEA license for controlled substances in MA and Federal
Minimum Qualifications
License to practice veterinary medicine in US and MA, or ability to obtain within 6 months
Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime when needed
Must work outside in inclement weather conditions to provide veterinary care
Able to perform at a competent level under high stress conditions
Willingness to work in direct contact with dangerous animals and zoonotic diseases, and hazardous conditions
Understand zoonotic disease risks and practice safe handling when working with ZNE’s animal collection
Accredited by the USDA for health certificates and cervid cervical TB testing, or ability to obtain within 6 months
Must have rabies immunization and allow for rabies titers and TB testing according to ZNE policy
Must be vaccinated against SARS‑CoV‑2
Must abide by all written ZNE policies and procedures
Class III driver’s license
Class A firearms license, or ability to obtain within 6 months
Ability to pass CORI screens
