Basic Function and Responsibilities:
Operate and perform maintenance/repair work on boilers, autoclaves, sterilization/wash units, and supporting equipment. Coordinate the proper use, validation, and documentation of autoclaves, sterilization/wash units, and supporting steam utility systems in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations and AAMI standards.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities:
Maintain autoclaves (steam and vaporized hydrogen peroxide) and related equipment through preventative maintenance and repairs, including fitting, valve adjustments, pneumatic component replacements, and troubleshooting electrical or hydraulic systems.
Maintain and repair water systems for boilers supplying autoclaves/sterilization/wash equipment, including fitting, flaring, threading, and sweating.
Maintain boilers for medical-rated autoclaves/sterilizers/washers across Michigan Medicine, including off-site facilities, through preventative maintenance and repairs.
Inspect autoclave/sterilizer/wash equipment regularly for proper operation and determine when equipment needs replacement or end-of-life considerations.
Repair, maintain, program, or replace electrical motors, pumps, heat exchangers, valves, controls, relays, contactors, and control boards for autoclaves/sterilizers/washers, boilers, and related equipment.
Monitor vaporized hydrogen peroxide gas exhaust and prepare compliance reports for regulatory agencies.
Teardown and repair boilers, autoclaves, sterilizers, washers, and related equipment using rigging tools for safe handling of heavy objects.
Related Duties:
Utilize Maximo work order system for accurate tracking of work performed.
Complete assigned work orders prioritizing tasks effectively.
Program and maintain computerized control systems for autoclaves, boilers, and related equipment.
Generate reports on autoclave/sterilizer/wash systems as needed.
Inspect and adjust control mechanisms on autoclaves, sterilizers, washers, and boilers.
Inspect, install, and repair steam supply lines, valves, pumps, and safety devices.
Ensure equipment operates properly and validate compliance with AAMI and CDC standards.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from a four-year trade or vocational high school with mechanical courses included.
At least four years of increasing responsibility/experience in boiler/autoclave operation and repair, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Understanding of physics, chemistry, microbiology, and human anatomy.
Ability to work in confined spaces, warm, and noisy environments with proper PPE.
Mechanical aptitude and knowledge of boiler/autoclave and sterilization equipment operation, maintenance, and theory.
Physical ability to perform all duties required by the role.
