Position Details The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. It prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high‑quality journalism. As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J‑School equips the next generation of journalists with reporting, writing, interactive, technological, and entrepreneurial skills. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Administration and Finance, the Director of Budget and Finance will lead and administer the daily operations of the Finance Department and serve as a strategic partner with campus leaders in developing annual spending plans and budgets.
Duties
Develop and oversee the CUNY J‑School tax‑levy, non‑tax‑levy and Foundation budgets; preparing and providing departmental budgets; managing annual capital budget requests; preparing monthly expenditure reports; conducting variance analysis and miscellaneous reports as needed.
Oversee all financial operations including accounts payable, purchasing, and asset management in accordance with university policies; oversee credit card, travel & expense transactions, reconciliation, and reclassification processes; serve as chief liaison with vendors and service providers; responsible for some payroll and bursar functions.
Develop annual financial plan in consultation with the Assistant Dean on projected hires and other strategic goals; plan and achieve strategic financial and performance goals and objectives, prioritizing consistent with the school’s mission and vision.
Ensure compliance with university‑wide policies and procedures; in consultation with the Assistant Dean, develop and implement financial policies and procedures in accordance with university policies and New York State guidelines.
Serve as the grants officer for all J‑School Foundation funds and Chief Financial Officer for Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism CUNY Foundation, Inc.
Serve as the School’s internal control officer and chief liaison with internal and external auditors; manage audit process for annual university audits, journalism foundation, Graduate Student Association (GSA) and individual audits on programmatic grants; manage mid‑year and year‑end closings; filing required disclosures, reconciliations, and statements; serve on the Council of Business Managers.
Work with CUNY systems including the general ledger, accounts payable, HCM, ELM, asset management, student financials and payroll.
Collaborate with admissions, development office, and bursar office on allocation of scholarship awards and/or stipends.
Manage the College’s revenue operations including projecting revenues based on current and future enrollment trends, monitoring revenue collections versus university targets, and developing revenue estimates.
Research, plan and incorporate automated processes to promote efficiency and effectiveness; collaborate with University‑wide staff to identify opportunities for process improvements.
Supervise and develop the finance team.
Qualifications Bachelor’s Degree and eight years’ related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Finance and/or Accounting; CPA highly preferred.
Strong working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
Higher education experience.
Highly motivated self‑starter with supervisory experience; proven ability to build high‑performing teams.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and organizational skills.
Ability to collaborate with staff, faculty, the administration and the community.
Ability to establish plans and manage multiple assignments with conflicting priorities.
Must be detail oriented and accurate; ability to work independently on multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Experience working with City University of New York, New York State or New York City Financial systems and business operations.
Knowledge of New York State and City University of New York policies, procedures, and information systems.
Proficiency in PeopleSoft, Workday, Salesforce and Microsoft Excel.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Compensation and Benefits Salary: $136,546 – $155,388. CUNY’s benefits contribute significantly to total compensation, supporting health plans, retirement, tuition waivers for CUNY graduate study and generous paid time off.
