About our Department
We are the largest provider of psychiatric services in central Massachusetts with over 400 faculty members who work in a variety of settings within UMass Memorial Health, the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, and the public sector. We integrate our clinical, research, teaching and community partnership activities to help individuals and families transform their lives through recovery from mental illness and addiction.
The Department of Psychiatry has outstanding training programs which include 27 residents and fellows as well as 16 trainees. Our Psychiatry positions offer the opportunity for involvement in a full range of activities. We are a national leader in public sector psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, neurodevelopmental disorders, biological psychiatry, neuropsychiatry, forensic psychiatry, psychosocial rehabilitation, women's mental health, and addiction psychiatry.

Marlborough Hospital, in partnership with the Department of Psychiatry at UMass Memorial Health Care, is seeking a full-time Medical Director to lead its Behavioral Health Program. In this role, the Medical Director will provide clinical, administrative, and managerial leadership for a 22-bed adult inpatient psychiatric unit. This unit is supported by a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner, part-time Psychiatrist(s), and a dedicated multidisciplinary team that includes nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. Overnight and weekend coverage is handled by additional psychiatrists.
The Medical Director will oversee patient care with a focus on medication management and medical issues while maintaining a daily caseload. Responsibilities include conducting psychiatric assessments, participating in daily treatment team meetings, managing discharge planning, and facilitating family communications when necessary. Additionally, the Medical Director will represent the department on various hospital committees, present cases at Medical Staff Quality Assurance meetings, and lead performance improvement initiatives to ensure high standards of care.
The ideal candidate will have strong academic credentials and sound clinical expertise, as well as proven administrative and managerial skills. Familiarity with quality assurance measures and regulatory compliance standards, such as those set by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health (MA DMH) and The Joint Commission, is essential.
This role requires someone committed to delivering exceptional patient care while mentoring and supporting the unit's team members.

Qualifications Eligible individuals should have the following qualifications:
Must hold an MD or DO degree and qualify for a Massachusetts license
Be board certified or board eligible
