Job Description
Pay Range: $18.98 hr - $19.80 hr
Overview
- The Phlebotomist will perform specimen collection and processing in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment.
- This role includes drawing blood, processing specimens, labeling, and ensuring compliance with all safety and quality standards.
- The candidate will interact with patients, accurately document specimen data, and maintain laboratory equipment and records.
Responsibilities
- Perform blood draws (venipuncture) and other specimen collections (urine, fecal) according to established procedures.
- Explain procedures to patients clearly and courteously.
- Demonstrate proper technique using straight needles and butterfly needles.
- Collect, label, centrifuge, split, freeze, and store specimens according to test orders and protocols.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and ensure 100% accuracy.
- Package specimens for transport and maintain specimen integrity according to temperature and protocol requirements.
- Update patient information and laboratory records accurately.
- Record maintenance data and perform decontamination of equipment as required.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations.
- Answer telephone calls and provide laboratory results as appropriate.
- Attend annual department training and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Required Skills And Qualifications
- Valid Phlebotomy certification as required by the state of employment.
- Minimum of 6 months’ experience performing venipunctures in a fast‑paced lab or hospital setting.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen handling and documentation.
- Ability to perform phlebotomy on patients of all ages and handle high patient volumes.
- Experience with data entry and laboratory processing.
Preferred Skills
- At least 1 year of phlebotomy experience.
- Experience performing “hard sticks” and working with various needle types.
- Ability to manage large workloads efficiently.
