Job Description:
Under general supervision, a Gardener performs routine maintenance and landscaping renovation tasks to care for athletic fields, parks, playgrounds, and other landscaped areas. Responsibilities include preparing soil, planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, pruning, pest and disease control, lawn maintenance, grounds maintenance, operating equipment, and general maintenance to ensure clean, safe premises.
Prepares soil by rototilling, grading, spading, and fertilizing to promote plant growth and prevent drainage problems.
Maintains plants by planting, transplanting, cultivating, irrigating, and pruning.
Identifies and destroys pests and diseases using Integrated Pest Management.
Maintains lawn areas by raking, edging, mowing, watering, weeding, aerating, fertilizing, and over‑seeding.
Maintains grounds of athletic fields, parks, and public spaces by clearing brush, sweeping, raking, cleaning litter, clearing drains, and preventing hazardous conditions.
Operates power and manual equipment such as mowers, water equipment, gopher traps, and other tools.
Performs routine maintenance on gardening equipment to keep it in working condition.
Performs general maintenance duties on grounds and facilities such as athletic fields, public easements, restroom facilities, and irrigation systems.
May be assigned to work with and/or direct the work of volunteers.
Working Conditions:
Work may be exposed to inclement weather, hazardous materials, driving, riding mowers, and public spaces. Weekend or shift work may be required.
Special Requirements:
Ability to lift, drag, and move large and heavy plants and equipment; kneel, bend, and squat for extended periods. Probationary period used to evaluate these abilities.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
Three (3) years verified experience in the care, construction, or maintenance of landscaped areas with planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and pest control in sports fields, golf courses, parks, gardens, arboreta, greenhouses, nurseries, botanical gardens or public landscaped areas.
OR possession of a Certificate of Achievement from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower or greenhouse production or related field and two (2) years verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas with planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and pest control in the above areas.
OR possession of an Associate of Arts or Science degree from an accredited college or university in horticulture, landscaping, gardening, nursery and garden center operation, commercial cut flower or greenhouse production or related field and eighteen (18) months verifiable experience in the care, construction or maintenance of landscaped areas with planting, weeding, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning, and pest control in the above areas.
OR completion of 3,000 hours of the City and County of San Francisco's gardener apprenticeship program.
License:
Requires possession of a valid California driver’s license.
Condition of Employment:
Valid driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit legal performance of essential functions.
Verification:
