The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis and performing various screening tests. This position ensures accurate specimen collection, processing, and documentation in accordance with established laboratory and hospital procedures.

The Phlebotomist is responsible for obtaining and preparing specimens for laboratory analysis and performing various screening tests. This position ensures accurate specimen collection, processing, and documentation in accordance with established laboratory and hospital procedures.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Obtain blood specimens and collect non-blood specimens (e.g., urine, sputum, throat swabs) for laboratory testing.
- Perform screening tests and accurately report results.
- Process and prepare specimens for laboratory testing and reference laboratory dispatch.
- Resolve ambiguous or unusual test orders by contacting the ordering physician, pathologist, nursing staff, or reference laboratory.
- Refer unresolved or unclear orders to the originator for clarification before collection or processing and notify the supervisor of unresolved cases.
- Contribute to overall laboratory operations and assist with institutional needs as required.
- Attend department staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
- Maintain compliance with laboratory and hospital policies, procedures, and safety practices.
- Keep the work area clean and organized, and restock supplies as needed.
- Adhere to all department policies and quality standards.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Phlebotomy certification preferred.
- One to two years of experience in a phlebotomy role required.
- Previous experience or education in a healthcare-related field preferred.
- Successful completion of on-the-job training as provided by the Phlebotomy/Accession Lab Supervisor within the probationary period (extensions granted by the Laboratory Manager if needed).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of medical terminology.
- CPR certification preferred.
- Ability to maintain accuracy and professionalism in a fast-paced environment.
- Physical Requirements:
- Light work, exerting up to 15 pounds of force occasionally (up to 33% of the time).
- Ability to stand, bend, move, and perform repetitive tasks for extended periods.
- Must be able to work designated shift lengths, including 8- and 12-hour shifts.
- Periods of sitting at a desk and using a computer.
- Working Environment:
- Clinical laboratory and patient care settings.
- Exposure to biohazard materials and bodily fluids (PPE provided).
