The BSA/AML Analyst II analyses complex events of suspicious activity and/or money laundering to ensure all potentially suspicious events are identified, documented, and reported within specified timeframes in accordance with the Bank Secrecy Act Compliance Program. The analyst assists the BSA Operations Manager with maintaining records and files to ensure efficient and consistent reporting of all suspicious investigations.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Review daily tasks, perform independent analysis, and quality control to determine activity that should be escalated for potential suspicious activity reporting.
Determine if a case should be created and/or escalated SAR consideration; obtain approval from the BSA Operations Manager as necessary; and assist with documentation within regulatory timeframes and in accordance with the Bank Secrecy Act Compliance Program.
Compile data and maintain necessary records and files to ensure efficient and consistent reporting of all suspicious investigations.
Serve as a subject matter expert for BSA department staff with a proficiency in investigations related to money laundering and other potentially suspicious activities.
Compose narratives to document potentially suspicious activity for reporting purposes and create reports based on available information related to the investigation.
Make recommendations for closing accounts and perform associated follow up to ensure the closure of the accounts.
Research, analyze, and investigate customer account behavior on a daily basis for potential suspicious activity and/or money laundering; track trends and detect unusual activity or behavior; monitor large currency activity and transactions; determine if transactions are suspicious in nature, such as significant changes in balances, cash structuring in deposits, loans payments and certificate of deposit purchases, wire or ACH transfers, monetary instrument sales, new account openings, etc.; and respond to alerts detected by the Bank’s AML or OFAC software system.
Review large currency transactions and report for completeness and accuracy; file appropriate currency transaction reports within required deadlines.
Assume responsibility for special projects including Bank’s OFAC and Information Sharing Program, gathering data, and preparing reports for the BSA Operations Manager.
Assist in updating and maintaining BSA/AML/OFAC policies and procedures to maintain compliance with existing requirements along with new and emerging risk to ensure an efficient and well‑organized program.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
Respond to inquiries or refer inquiries to the appropriate person and exhibit the necessary follow through with customers and/or staff involved.
Assume responsibility for various department functions in the absence of staff members or in overload situations.
Serve as subject matter expert for Community Bank staff on money laundering risk.
Complete all required compliance exams on a yearly basis.
Adhere to all First United Policies and Procedures.
Dress professionally.
Education and Work Experience
High School Diploma or GED required.
Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice/Criminology or Finance/Banking/Business preferred.
ACAMS and/or CFE Certifications preferred.
Minimum 3-5 years Banking/Compliance experience required.
Knowledge of federal BSA/AML regulations required.
Familiar with bank operations in general.
Technical/Functional Competencies
Ability to interface professionally with Management and Team members, State and Federal regulators, and business partners.
Ability to work with highly confidential and sensitive business information and maintain high standards of confidentiality.
Proficient in Microsoft Office or similar software programs.
Must possess a high level of initiative and a natural investigative demeanor.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment to achieve department goals and objectives consistent with First United’s standards of excellence.
Must be comfortable managing multiple priorities and produce professional and accurate work product, sometimes under time constraints.
Must possess the desire to increase learning and gain further expertise on AML/BSA/OFAC compliance matters.
