With a deep commitment to expanding opportunities for underrepresented groups in engineering, the Mitchell School of Engineering contributes by offering innovative programs and fostering excellence in teaching, research, and service. Our next chair will be a servant leader who inspires innovation, fosters inclusion, and positions the department to lead in areas such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, smart grids, quantum technologies, 6G wireless communications, cybersecurity and other high-impact areas of electrical and computer engineering. With a 16 member-faculty, undergraduate enrollment of 371 students and graduate enrollment of 63 students, the department is the largest in the MSOE.

About The Role Reporting to the Dean of the School of Engineering, the chair of ECE is the department’s chief academic and administrative officer. The chair is responsible for leading and shaping the department’s strategic direction, promoting a culture of excellence in research and teaching, and building strong collaborations across disciplines, industries, and global networks. This is a 12-month, tenured appointment at the rank of full professor.

Job Duties

Aligned with Morgan’s goal of becoming an R-1 Carnegie institution, develop and implement a strategic vision for the growth of the department, advancing its educational, research, and service missions while aligning with emerging trends in the field.

Drive innovation in curriculum and research by promoting initiatives in areas such as AI and machine learning, sustainable energy systems, advanced communications, quantum computing, and biomedical devices.

Cultivate and expand cross-disciplinary collaborations, strengthen industry and corporate partnerships, and develop local and global networks of support that reflect the needs of 21st-century employers.

Oversee undergraduate and graduate programs, ensuring academic excellence, accreditation compliance, and relevance to the future of the profession.

Recruit, retain, mentor, and promote outstanding and diverse faculty and staff.

Manage departmental resources, operations, and budgets effectively and responsibly.

Partner with the Dean and University leadership on policy development and strategic priorities.

Lead and support fundraising and external engagement efforts to enhance the department’s visibility and resources.

Required Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Other Characteristics

Education

Possess an earned doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

Experience

Have an established record of accomplishments in teaching, research and service which merits appointment at the rank of full professor.

Have gained significant administrative and leadership experience in an academic, professional, or research setting.

Demonstrate strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, with a proven ability to build partnerships and lead diverse teams.

Indicate a commitment to working with a diverse student body.

Other Preferences for Consideration

A record of success in fundraising and securing external support from a variety of sources, including federal, state, private, and industrial.

A record of increasing responsibility as an administrator and leader.

Experience with interdisciplinary and cross-institutional collaborations, entrepreneurship, and the development of new and innovative programs.
