About Department 408 - Life Cycle Engineering D408 Life Cycle Engineering is responsible for the development of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) products and maintenance of ship design requirements to maximize the Operational Availability (Ao) of all ships in the fleet. From cradle to grave, this organization is involved during early concept arrangement, detail design, new construction, and support in-service assets to ensure fleet readiness and modernization efforts. Our influence during the design phase and documentation produced directly support the ship and all maintenance stakeholder during the ship's lifecycle.
Role Overview Life Cycle Engineering is seeking a highly motivated engineer with maintenance, test, and/or modernization related experience to support execution of Sustainment initiatives for VIRGINIA Class and SSN(X) Programs. In this role, you will work with the VIRGINIA Sustainment Engineering team to advise submarine concept designs as they are developed in the Teamcenter 3D model. You will apply your experience to influence designs in order to maximize the operational availability goals of the platform, and reduce total ownership costs to the NAVY during all levels of maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
Develop comprehension of ship specifications and desktop guides, as well as proficiency of key resources such as the Class Maintenance Plan (CMP), Planned Maintenance System (PMS) Viewer, and the Open Architectural Retrieval System (OARS) 3M system
Maintain ownership of delegated projects from task leads supporting current and future VIRGINIA Class design efforts as well as SSN(x) tasking
Perform independent evaluation of ship systems and component designs for maintenance and accessibility, reliability, facilitating lifting and handling needs, as well as life cycle cost analysis to support relevant trade studies and arrangement development
Become proficient with NX Teamcenter in order to support major area team reviews and working level meetings with Design & Engineering
Positively represent the department during engagement with Design & Engineering making informed recommendations, articulating concerns, and striving to reach consensus amongst interfacing disciplines
Routine interaction with design, engineering, program management is required, along with developing content and presenting to technical leads, Public Shipyards, and the NAVSEA maintenance community
Participate in periodic industrial area walkthroughs of the shipyard and submarine hulls under constructions to raise deck plate awareness
Act as a change agent for promoting best design practices that reduce in-port maintenance periods and increase the operational time at sea
Qualifications Required
Bachelor of Science degree or higher in Engineering
5+ years of related post graduate engineering experience
Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance through the department of defense
Preferred
Experience in applying in Mechanical, Ocean, Structural, Electrical, Materials or Systems Engineering
Task lead/project management experience
Experience with submarine maintenance principles
Knowledge of special emphasis programs (SUBSAFE, DSS-SOC, Fly-By-Wire)
Familiarity of pertinent engineering tools and applications (NX Teamcenter, CMP, ELCADD, ATIS, NAVY OARS 3M, PMS Viewer)
Skills
Must be capable of combining assertive initiative with professional discipline to accomplish challenging tasks, and work to remove barriers that hinder change
Excellent technical writing, presentation, problem resolution and risk mitigation skills
