Location Chicago Department of Transportation – 2 N. Lasalle, Suite 820, Chicago, IL 60602 Days: Monday‑Friday Hours: 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Job Overview This career‑service position oversees major engineering projects within the Bridge and Highway Sections of the Division of Engineering, supporting over 300 bridge structures and 1,000 miles of arterial streets. The role functions as a senior project manager for design, review, and implementation of safety, operational, and state‑of‑good‑repair upgrades.
Bridge Section Responsibilities
Project management of bridge projects, including schedules, contracts, funding, material procurement, and supervision of engineering staff.
Assessment of inspection reports and determination of next steps for structural conditions.
Preparation and review of engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and cost estimates.
Oversight of field surveys, monitoring of work in progress, and evaluation of engineering changes and contract amendments.
Approval of partial and final contractor payments and review of payment requests for compliance with contract specifications.
Coordination with consultants to ensure compliance with design criteria, project scope, and budget specifications.
Highway Section Responsibilities
Senior project management of roadway reconstruction, reconfigurations, arterial resurfacing, signal modernizations, and intersection reconfigurations.
Development of project scopes, budgets, and schedules; management of design consultant work.
Oversight of design review meetings and representation of the City at community meetings.
Coordination with utilities, other City agencies, IDOT, FHWA, and other regulatory bodies for project approvals.
Preparation and review of engineering designs, drawings, calculations, specifications, and cost estimates for infrastructure projects.
Monitoring of project accounting, finance agreements, and encumbrances; review of payment vouchers and engineering changes.
Attendance at weekly construction review meetings and legal hearings to provide technical information.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Three years of progressively responsible civil engineering experience, including one year of supervisory experience (or an equivalent combination of training and experience).
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
Registration as a Professional Engineer (R.P.E.) in the State of Illinois required at time of employment.
Valid State of Illinois driver’s license required.
Preference
Previous experience as a design or project engineer on bridge projects.
Experience performing field inspections on bridge or roadway infrastructure.
Experience designing bridge repairs.
Experience reviewing project scopes, calculations, plans, specifications, and estimates.
Experience working with transportation agencies (CDOT, IDOT, FHWA).
Project management experience in urban transportation design or construction projects.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (OneNote, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
