Responsibilities
Monitor plant SCADA system and adjust operations to meet daily demands.
Operate water treatment facilities, including urban runoff diversion systems, in compliance with state and federal regulations.
Perform routine maintenance on filter plant equipment, including backwashes, oiling, cleaning, painting, and calibration.
Conduct laboratory tests such as turbidity, chlorine residual, jar testing, zeta potential, and pH testing.
Inspect plant equipment, prepare work orders, and troubleshoot performance problems.
Provide customer service and update customer account databases.
Respond to emergency work requirements on a 24‑hour basis.
Operate pumps, valves, gates, engines, and electric motors to control flow and treatment processes.
Read meters to determine chemical levels, document usage, and maintain shift logs.
Receive chemicals and ensure compliance with security and safety procedures.
Assist System Operators, Laboratory personnel, and other Plant Operators in all phases of water supply treatment and distribution.
Assist with investigation of water quality problems in the distribution system and perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Modern office procedures and clerical techniques.
Computer programs and software, such as Microsoft Office.
Principles of proper water quality sampling.
Operation and maintenance of surface water, groundwater, and reverse osmosis treatment plant equipment.
Basic water quality regulations and water treatment plant operating policies.
Basic occupational health and safety procedures.
Mathematical and mechanical principles and data interpretation methods.
Basic hazardous materials and chemical safety requirements.
Proper English usage, including spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
Ability To
Follow laboratory procedures and operate related software.
Use tools for general repairs and adjustments to motors, pumps, and other equipment.
Perform mathematical calculations and troubleshoot equipment.
Serve as a hazardous material responder and maintain safety requirements.
Handle customer inquiries with courtesy and efficiency.
Work effectively under pressure and on rotating shifts.
Communicate clearly in oral and written form.
Work around animals and insects such as dogs, snakes, spiders, bees, rodents, and others.
Education / Training / Experience Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. Typical entry requires completion of twelfth grade plus state‑mandated training in water treatment plant operations and experience with motors, pumps, and hydraulic equipment.
Licenses / Certifications – Required Conditions Of Employment
California Class C Driver License with a safe driving record.
Water Treatment Plant Operator T3 certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board.
Water Distribution Operator D2 certification issued by the California State Water Resources Control Board.
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification within six months of hire.
Physical Requirements
Hear normal conversation.
Mobility of arms and dexterity of hands to write legibly.
Visual ability to read small print and video messages.
Sit or stand for prolonged periods.
Operate standard passenger vehicles and wear appropriate PPE.
Lift or carry up to fifty pounds.
Work outside in weather extremes and climb ladders and stairs on water storage tanks and facilities.
Handle chemicals typically found in a water treatment facility.
Work around and with electrical equipment.
Working Hours Rotating shifts or those assigned by the supervisor.
Other Conditions
Uniform must be worn; a neat, clean, and pressed appearance is required at all times.
Good judgment is expected in determining proper dress and appearance.
All facial hair must be kept neat and trimmed.
