Responsibilities

Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care for a complex patient population.

Provide patient and family education, clinical support, and psychosocial/emotional support before, during, and after treatment.

Care for patients during brachytherapy procedures and external beam treatments.

Provide care to adult and pediatric patients.

Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary team members at BWH, DFCI, and partnering institutions.

Apply clinical expertise, critical thinking, and collaborative practice to deliver current cancer care and clinical research.

Report directly to the Radiation Oncology RN Flow Manager.

Perform procedures and point-of-care testing as ordered.

Job Summary The Registered Nurse is a professional nurse registered in Massachusetts responsible for planning, providing, and evaluating patient care in accordance with Nursing Standards of Care. They demonstrate initiative, knowledge, and clinical skills in caring for patients with complex needs and are accountable to a designated nurse manager or supervisor.

Essential Functions

Clinical Practice

– Organize care, assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation; set priorities and communicate effectively.

Quality of Care

– Document patient care clearly; develop comprehensive plans of care, education, and discharge; participate in quality improvement programs; administer medication safely; perform nursing procedures; utilize universal precautions.

Coordination/Collaboration

– Interact professionally with patients, families, and colleagues; collaborate with other disciplines; uphold ANA code of ethics.

Education

– Pursue personal and professional growth; share knowledge; participate in educational programs.

Research

– Apply nursing research findings and support investigators.

Budget

– Use time and materials efficiently; support cost‑effective care.

Personnel

– Orient new staff; evaluate staff; manage unit responsibilities; recommend policy changes.

Qualifications

Graduate of an approved school of nursing with current registration in Massachusetts.

1‑2 years of oncology experience required; 2 years current radiation oncology experience preferred; procedural and pediatric experience preferred.

Oncology Nursing Certification and PALs certification preferred.

Schedule

Department hours approximately 6:30 am‑7:00 pm; nurses work four 10‑hour shifts, Monday‑Friday with occasional weekends.

Working Conditions Work in environments with exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, blood, radioisotopes, and radiation. Work entails walking and lifting.

Skills and Abilities Basic analytic thinking, observational skills, prioritization, functioning under stress, interpersonal and communication skills, application of hospital standards, teamwork, respect, time and priority management.

Supervisory Responsibility Functionally responsible for the supervision of other RNs, technical and support personnel.

Pay Range $41.71 – $105.65 / Hourly
