Protection and Control Commissioning Engineer
Join National Electrical Engineering Consultants LLC as a Protection and Control Commissioning Engineer. In this role, you will be responsible for end-to-end commissioning, start-up, and functional testing of protection and control systems for utility-scale photovoltaic (PV) and battery energy storage systems (BESS). You will ensure all systems are installed, configured, and tested according to engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and project specifications to enable safe and reliable operation.
Position Specific Description Seeking an experienced engineer with a strong background in protection and control systems within utility-scale renewable energy projects. The candidate must demonstrate expertise in commissioning procedures, relay testing, SCADA integration, communication protocols, and system troubleshooting. A minimum of 5 years of experience in energy infrastructure commissioning—specifically in protection and control systems—is required.
Job Overview This position involves the commissioning and field validation of protection and control systems including relays, SCADA hardware/software, and communication equipment. The engineer will ensure that all systems are installed, configured, and functioning in accordance with design specifications, safety requirements, and operational standards. Responsibilities include field coordination with EPC contractors, vendors, and internal teams to achieve safe and timely energization and turnover.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Lead the commissioning of protection relays, IEDs, and SCADA-integrated control systems.
Execute and document protection relay testing (point-to-point, functional, and end-to-end).
Review protection and communication schematics and verify installations meet design intent.
Commission and troubleshoot RTUs, PLCs, meters, communication switches and fiber optic systems.
Interface with OEMs, vendors, and EPCs for technical coordination and resolution of field issues.
Support energization activities and witness acceptance testing for substations and switchgear.
Validate SCADA system performance and assist in integration with centralized control platforms.
Participate in project meetings, risk assessments, and progress reporting.
Review commissioning documentation and as-built markups for turnover packages.
Ensure compliance with project QA/QC standards, NERC/FERC guidelines, and cybersecurity protocols.
Train site personnel on protection and control systems operation and maintenance.
Preferred Qualifications
In-depth knowledge of AC/DC power systems and protective relay schemes.
Proficiency in using relay test sets (e.g., Omicron, Doble) and test software.
Understanding of SCADA platforms.
Strong ability to read and interpret one-lines, wiring diagrams, and network schematics.
Experience with commissioning documentation and turnover processes.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills in live operational environments.
Project coordination experience across cross-functional teams and contractors. Physical Requirements / Working Environment
Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and stand for extended periods.
Ability to operate motor vehicles and travel between remote sites.
Willingness to travel as project assignments require.
