Compensation Range The base pay scale for this position is $82,500.00 - $126,000.00. In addition, this position will be eligible for additional benefits consistent with the role. The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be determined based on various factors, including but not limited to: scope of role, level of experience, education, accomplishments, internal equity, budget, and subject to Fair Market Value evaluation. The hiring range listed is a good faith determination of potential compensation at the time of this job advertisement and may be modified in the future.
Position Overview The Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) is seeking a Software Engineer specializing in medical imaging and computer vision to support technical development projects within its new Institute for Technology Development (HSS ITD). The role will initially focus on technical development within our groundbreaking Digital Twin Platform in Orthopedics project. This fully-funded 4-year initiative will develop infrastructure to build patient-specific orthopedic digital twins to transform surgical planning and personalized care. In this role, you will create and optimize deep learning models for automated MRI segmentation, develop 3D visualization interfaces for surgeons, and build the imaging pipeline that transforms raw MRI data into patient-specific anatomical models.

Key Responsibilities
Work with imaging scientists to develop and train deep learning models for automated segmentation of orthopedic joint anatomy from MRI scans
Implement computer vision algorithms for medical image processing and analysis
Build and optimize AI inference pipelines
Create web-based 3D visualization interfaces allowing surgeons to interact with patient-specific joint models
Develop uncertainty quantification and confidence scoring mechanisms for AI outputs
Implement automated quality control and failure detection systems
Build continuous learning pipelines for model improvement using clinical feedback
Integrate image processing workflows with hospital PACS systems
Ensure HIPAA compliance and healthcare data security throughout imaging workflow
Collaborate with radiologists and clinicians to validate segmentation accuracy and clinical utility
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Biomedical Engineering, or related field
3+ years of experience in computer vision and deep learning application development
Strong proficiency in Python and deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch)
Experience with medical image processing (DICOM, ITK, VTK, SimpleITK)
Knowledge of convolutional neural networks, image segmentation, and 3D computer vision
Understanding of GPU computing and model optimization techniques
Experience with version control systems and collaborative software development
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in Computer Vision, Medical Imaging, or Machine Learning
Experience with medical imaging modalities (MRI, CT) and PACS systems
Experience with web development frameworks for data visualization (React, Three.js, or similar)
Knowledge of anatomical structures and medical terminology
Experience with cloud-based AI/ML deployment (AWS, Docker, Kubernetes)
Understanding of healthcare regulations and HIPAA compliance
Background in interactive 3D graphics and scientific visualization
Experience with clinical validation of AI systems
Work Environment Based in our hospital’s Institute for Technology Development, you will work closely with radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, and imaging technologists. This collaborative environment offers direct access to clinical expertise and real-world validation of your technical solutions.
