Overview
Leads high quality research requiring significant expertise in a particular field (e.g., health economics, implementation science) for system-wide projects. An expert communicator, project manager, research collaborator, and lead contact for multi-site studies. Works independently, collaborating with scientists and investigators to enable high quality research; serves as an expert resource across Advocate Aurora Health, consulting on research design and methods, conducting complex statistical analyses, and translating results to scientists, investigators, clinical leaders and collaborators. Serves as a principal investigator or co-investigator on projects, and leads or co-leads protocol development, study planning and implementation, presenting scientific abstracts at national conferences, and leading and/or co-leading manuscript writing and publication. Responsibilities include expert consultations with investigators, leading research projects and study teams, conducting complex analyses, and mentoring staff. Leads research projects from design to dissemination, as well as committees, initiatives, high profile projects, grant submissions, presentations and publications.
Major Responsibilities
Leads multiple, complex research studies to accomplish study objectives. Collaborates with scientists, investigators and leaders to manage and coordinate the work of research associates, research analysts, and other study team members to ensure research objectives are met. Provides expert scientific knowledge in a particular field across all phases of a research project, including protocol development, research design and methods, implementation and analysis plans, data management, and dissemination activities. Develops strategic relationships with internal and external collaborators to bring in a pipeline of funding that aligns with system priorities. Leads developing research measures/instruments and other data collection forms. Develops and implements data collection processes including identifying data sources and approval and sign-off on data dictionary. Conducts site visits to review enrollment procedures if applicable. Oversees pilot studies to evaluate feasibility of enrollment and achieving sample size. Leads the team in recruitment and develops relationships with site clinicians and staff to collaborate and identify novel methods to ensure recruitment goals are achieved. Independently manages large datasets and leads study team in analysis and interpretation of results. Oversees complex data requests with the research analytics team. Leads and conducts advanced data analyses (aligned with discipline expertise) and collaborates with biostatistician and data management staff. Translates research findings for reporting to clinical and leadership audiences by creating expert summaries and actionable conclusions and recommendations. Leads projects with research collaborators, coordinating work, managing data, implementation and other aspects to completion within the scope of the contract or grant. Conducts outreach activities to engage stakeholders and promote research. Leads and contributes to meetings and workgroup calls to achieve study objectives and communicate progress to investigators, study teams, collaborators, and sponsors. Tracks progress to complete studies on time within contract or grant scope. Acts as a subject matter expert for methods and techniques in a particular field and serves as a system-wide resource and mentor for other team members; Leads educational sessions and mentors investigators and research teams in their field. Contributes to and leads grant submissions and the dissemination of findings as a co-investigator or key contributor in writing proposals, abstracts, manuscripts and presentations.
Education/Experience
PhD Degree in Health Science or related field. Typically requires 7 years of experience in health care, academic or industry settings.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
Expert in sophisticated research methods associated with the particular discipline/training. Expert with statistical software (R, SAS, STATA, or SPSS). Excellent in data management, cleaning, and analysis of large datasets. Experience providing consultations with scientists and investigators. Proficient with MS-Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and relational databases (e.g., REDCap). Significant experience leading teams on complex projects. Customer service orientation. Demonstrated ability to work independently with excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to multi-task under pressure, and high accuracy. Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and project management skills. Ability to build collaborative working relationships. Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience in publications as co-author or lead author and grant submissions as co-investigator. Experience with electronic health records and other data collection databases.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Will generally be exposed to a rapid-paced and complex health care environment. Remote work with in-person presence (e.g., site visits, recruitment activities, meetings) as needed. May require ability to drive and travel to work-related meetings/functions; exposure to road, weather and travel hazards.
