Job Description:
Responsible for the strategic and operational leadership of Essentia Health’s (EH) Inpatient and Outpatient Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) programs across all regions. This role requires advanced clinical and coding expertise, along with a deep understanding of complex disease processes, healthcare reimbursement, and regulatory compliance. Oversees the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive CDI program that supports accurate, complete, and compliant documentation for both inpatient and outpatient encounters. Partners with coding, Utilization Management and the Physician Advisor program to ensure documentation reflects medical necessity, supports appropriate resource use, and aligns with clinical and regulatory standards. Provides hands-on expertise in documentation integrity and collaborates with regional and site-specific executive leadership to sustain a concurrent CDI model. Facilitates strong engagement with physicians, advanced practitioners, coding professionals, and other key stakeholders to promote documentation excellence and ensure appropriate reimbursement for services rendered. Builds and maintains collaborative relationships with internal teams, external consultants, and physician leaders to achieve established CDI goals and performance metrics.

Qualifications
Education Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in nursing, health information management, or other related healthcare field
Required Qualifications
5 years of experience in a clinical documentation improvement program
At least 3 years of experience in CDI leadership in an acute care hospital
Licensure/Certification Qualifications
Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Nurse (RN)
CCDS or CDIP certification preferred
