Overview
Insight Global is seeking a highly skilled and client-focused lead substation physical engineer to join our dynamic team. This role specializes in the design of high-voltage (4kV–230kV) and extra-high-voltage (above 230kV) substations for utility systems and renewable energy interconnection projects. The engineer will take full technical ownership of physical substation design, including general arrangements, plan and elevation views, grounding and conduit layouts, AC/DC calculations for station service and battery systems, and preparation of equipment specifications, bills of materials, and construction documentation. Responsibilities also include conducting grounding, lightning, and bus fault stress studies, supporting procurement and construction phases, and coordinating with internal and external stakeholders such as transmission, distribution, civil, geotechnical, and survey teams. A strong understanding of NESC, NEC, and relevant standards is essential. The ideal candidate will also contribute as a technical specialist in system protection and communication, participate in client technical review meetings, and help optimize engineering team performance and ROI. Responsibilities
Take full technical ownership of physical substation design for HV and EHV projects. Develop general arrangements, plan and elevation views, and grounding/conduit layouts. Perform AC/DC calculations for station service and battery systems. Prepare equipment specifications, bills of materials, and construction documentation. Conduct grounding, lightning, and bus fault stress studies (e.g., CDEGS, WinIGS). Support procurement and construction phases; coordinate with internal and external stakeholders (transmission, distribution, civil, geotechnical, survey). Apply knowledge of NESC, NEC, and current substations standards to design work. Serve as a technical specialist in system protection and communications; participate in client technical review meetings. Contribute to engineering team performance optimization and ROI initiatives. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited program. Minimum 7 years of experience in high-voltage substation physical design. Proficiency in AutoCAD or Bentley MicroStation. Experience with grounding and lightning analysis tools (e.g., CDEGS, WinIGS). Ability to assess mechanical and thermal effects of high fault currents. Strong knowledge of NEC, NESC, and substation technology trends. Nice to Have Skills & Experience
Active Professional Engineer (PE) license. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Familiarity with outage sequences, constructability, and O&M considerations. Experience writing scopes of work, performing QA/QC, and managing direct reports. Background in proposal development and project estimating. Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls.
