Optical Test Engineer We are seeking an experienced
Optical Test Engineer
to design, develop, and execute test procedures for optical components and systems used in space applications. The engineer will analyze test data, ensure products meet performance and quality standards, and collaborate with cross‑functional teams on high‑performance optical and mechatronic modules.
Responsibilities:
Design and develop detailed test plans, procedures, and methodologies for optical systems and components.
Conduct comprehensive optical testing and diagnostics using specialized equipment such as interferometers, power meters, and spectrophotometers.
Analyze test data, interpret performance results, generate technical reports, and provide recommendations for design optimization.
Develop and maintain automated test systems, including scripting or coding in Python or MATLAB.
Troubleshoot optical issues in prototypes and final products, providing technical solutions.
Collaborate closely with design, manufacturing, and other cross‑functional teams to ensure reliability and integration readiness.
Prepare comprehensive documentation, including test plans, work instructions, and performance reports.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Opto‑Mechanical Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience).
5+ years of experience as an optical test engineer.
Experience with space systems, free‑space optical systems, and precision mechanisms.
Hands‑on experience with optical sources, metrology, and instrumentation in the infrared.
Experience with single‑mode fiber optics, free‑space fiber coupling, and diffraction‑limited optical measurements.
Proficiency with interferometry and high‑speed optical tracking.
Hands‑on experience with space qualification of precision optical systems.
U.S. citizenship or lawful permanent residency required under export control regulations.
Preferred:
10+ years of optical test engineering experience.
Experience building, aligning, and testing laser optical communication systems for space applications.
Experience with precision space mechanisms.
Experience building optical systems in laboratory or
Class 100K clean room
environments.
Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and collaboration skills.
